Even though the number of empty homes in West Devon is below the regional and national averages, we continue to do all we can to bring the empty properties we do have back into use.
The most common way of doing this is by contacting property owners, encouraging them to either occupy the property or sell it on the open market.
Many empty properties are reported by neighbours once they become unsightly, neglected, or used by people that shouldn’t be there. These reports often follow the death of the owner. We use in-house records and the Land Registry to gather information but also work with third-party ‘heir hunter’ organisations to locate family members - these services are provided free of charge.
If you are concerned about an empty home near where you live then let the Council know and we will check if we are able to take any action.

We're consulting on our Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan - documents that help protect our built environment in such a special place - and we'd love to hear your thoughts.
Have your say on the conservation area of Tavistock, a unique stannary town in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape.
The town's conservation area looks to conserve Tavistock's special architecture and historic character. The latest appraisal of the area suggests a small boundary extension and other potential improvements.

Our partners Safer Devon and South Devon and Dartmoor Community Safety Partnership have launched a new series of free Let's Talk online sessions aimed at dads and male carers.
We all know parenting can be difficult at times, and dads and male carers can often find it even harder to support their children as advice and help is frequently tailored towards mothers and female carers.
The short online sessions running this March provide tips and techniques covering key safeguarding issues to help support young people to navigate some of the challenges they face and to allow men to feel more confident in their parenting.
Each session is FREE and will last around 20 minutes covering a range of topics including:
So if you’re a dad, grandad, uncle, carer or male role model to a young person and want to help support them and keep them safe, book your Let’s Talk Dads session today.
While these sessions are aimed at dads and male carers of course mums are welcome too!
