Keep safe during the cold weather

cold

A cold weather health alert across England is in place until midday on Wednesday 8 January 2024.

Please look out for family and friends who might be vulnerable to low temperatures.

Because of the forecast, we have activated our Severe Weather Emergency Protocol, which when temperatures drop below a certain level, we put in place additional accommodation for homeless people to prevent harm and death. We will review our protocol again on Saturday 4 January.

If you know of anyone who is sleeping rough, or if you are concerned about a rough sleeper, please contact a member of the Housing Team on 01803 861234. For outside of office hours, you can call us on 01803 861539.You can also connect with StreetLink, a service for reporting concerns about rough sleepers.

The latest advice on keeping warm and well in cold weather can be found on the UK Health Security Agency webpage

For weather updates, please visit the Met Office website for the most up to date information.

Inspiring our future farmers

Our Council Leader Cllr Mandy Ewings paid a visit to Horrabridge Primary School recently to see the outreach work being done by Devon County Council's Farmwise Devon programme.

The programme teaches children about farming, where our food comes from and how it's made. The County Council runs a special event in Westpoint Arena in Exeter for children to learn a hands-on lesson about farming. For those schools unable to attend, they have rolled out an outreach programme to schools.

Farmwise Events Manager Bev Brown and Mandy Ewings spoke to us about the day - click the thumbnail to watch our video.

Are you taking down decorations and cards after Christmas?

You can recycle cards with no glitter, stuck on bits or shiny bits - but you can't recycle glittery cards, cards with shiny bits or stuck on decorations.

You can also save old cards to reuse them as gift tags next year.
