Cryptosporidium update

landscape

For our Hillhead and Kingswear residents affected by the Cryptosporidium outbreak, we want to keep you updated as much as possible.

We are working with partners such as the UK Health Security Agency, South West Water, Torbay Council and Devon County Council to help support the District's residents and businesses.

This week, we share some important updates and guidance from South West Water.

For residents under the Boil Water notice

Please keep using your water supply as usual for bathing, flushing the toilet and laundry. This will keep the water circulating through household pipes aiding in the overall flushing process and will help to clean property networks.

You can recycle empty bottles to bottled water collection sites while these remain open at:

  • Churston Car Boot Field, TQ5 0PG
  • Broadsands Car Park, Broadsands Road, Paignton, TQ4 6HX
  • Freshwater Quarry Car Park, Blackball Lane, Brixham, TQ5 8BA

Flushing in the Hillhead area

South West Water have this week, successfully flushed their larger pipes in the Hillhead area. They tell us this is a significant step forward in removing Cryptosporidium from the network. They are now focusing on more targeted flushing within the area.

Overnight work and road closures in Kingswear

South West Water are carrying out further ice-pigging and some high-speed flushing in Kingswear.

Work started on Thursday 6 June and will continue until Friday 14 June, between the hours of 8.pm. and 8.am. The work involves some noise and a series of overnight road closures (diversion routes are marked).

Local residents may also experience an interruption, low pressure and/or discolouration to their water supply. After the work is finished at 8.a.m.,  water may be discoloured. Residents are advised that when turning on a cold tap, please let it run until any discolouration clears before using the water. Residents should still follow the boil water guidance.
