Your metal matters

metalmatters

When it comes to recycling, metal is hard to beat. That’s because it’s endlessly recyclable - every last bit can be turned into something else. It’s a cycle that can go on forever.

The food tins, drink cans and other metal packaging that you recycle at home could end up being transformed into any one of a wide number of new products. From a designer watch or a smartphone, to a washing machine or even a new bus, the possibilities are endless.

Every time metal is recycled it saves energy, cuts greenhouse gas emissions and saves on landfill space – so it’s good news for the planet.

You should have received a leaflet through your letterbox explaining more. You can also find out more on our website.

Help for vulnerable residents and veterans

Two one pound coins stacked on a five pound note. Money.

West Devon’s vulnerable residents and war pensioners and widow(er)s are on the way to receive financial support with paying their rent.

In West Devon, we help residents who receive the housing cost element of Universal Credit or Housing Benefit with short term payments to help them to cope with rent or other housing costs.

Over the past year alone, £118,233 has already been spent to support 137 West Devon residents with £9,000 still available for support. We expect a similar amount to be allocated for the coming year.

We have also recommended that we continue to ignore the entire 100% war pension income when assessing Housing Benefit claims. This means eligible pensioners will receive more support in paying their Housing Benefit which will help with the ongoing cost of living difficulties.

Our response to the Devolution Deal

council plan

As set out in our Council Plan, we are taking action to tackle the housing crisis, boost the local economy and work with communities to improve the area for future generations.

At our Special Council meeting on 5 March, we agreed that a Devon and Torbay Devolution Deal must support this work and benefit the Borough.

Our recent response to the consultation on the deal asks for reassurance that the voice of all our communities will be heard.

Okehampton businesses to have their say

okehampton

Are you part of the Okehampton business community?

If yes, you can have your say later this year on whether you want to create a Business Improvement District (BID).

If created, a BID could lead to new community events, improved marketing opportunities and other projects to help the town’s businesses.

The decision to hold a ballot comes after months of discussions, surveys, and consultation with Okehampton businesses to gauge the desire for a BID in the town. The work, carried out in partnership with Okehampton Town Council, Okehampton Hamlets Parish Council and Devon County Council, suggested there was a real desire for projects that would support the business community and have a positive impact on the town.

A ballot is set to take place in the summer.
