Let's Talk About South Hams

River Dart

We’ve developed a number of aims and ambitions for South Hams focused on challenges you’ve told us about. We now want your thoughts. Are we focused on the right things? Have we missed anything that is important to you and your community?

Our consultation on our draft Corporate Strategy will launch on Monday 25 September and there are a number of ways you will be able to have your say:

  • Through our online survey (available from Monday 25 September)
  • By taking part in our polls on our social media channels
  • Coming along to one of our public consultation sessions this October

More details coming next week...

Waste Container Deliveries

Recycling Container kerbside rollout boxes waste South Hams

Around 8,000 homes in the South Hams are set to receive new recycling containers in the next five weeks, as South Hams District Council prepares to improve its recycling and food waste collection service.

From Monday (25 September), the Council will be delivering the containers to the doorsteps and kerbsides of households who currently put out their recycling on the kerbside in blue and clear sacks.

Anyone who receives new containers should keep recycling as they already are (using their blue / clear sacks), until they hear from us by post on when to start using their new containers. Find somewhere safe to keep your new containers until then.

Each set of containers includes:

  • Two recycling boxes with lids
  • A white recycling sack
  • A kerbside food waste caddy
  • A smaller food waste caddy for your kitchen
  • An information pack explaining how to use each container and stickers for your boxes

We’re doing this so that in the near future, everyone in the district will receive the same kerbside recycling service, and so we can recycle more than ever before, including food waste.

We'll be sending a letter to all South Hams residents soon to advise on upcoming changes to the service. For many residents who already have their recycling containers, the main difference will be that the day of their weekly recycling and waste collections may change.

Council's Finances in Good Shape

money

We're pleased to say that despite increased costs and pressures, the Council's finances are in a good place as we look ahead to the future.

Over the past year, the cost of living has been difficult for residents, with high inflation and ever-increasing household bills, particularly in relation to energy. The Council has supported communities, residents and businesses during these difficult economic times.

We will continue to do everything we can support residents of the District, working closely with communities to involve you in all aspects of our work.

Find out more here about our work over the past year to keep our finances in great shape and offer the support you need.

We are investing in more homes

We are boosting our stock of homes to help tackle the housing crisis here in South Hams.

We have agreed to buy three more properties to support immediate and long term housing needs across the District, a top priority for our new administration.

Also, our new homes at St Anns Chapel will soon be available for local residents through Devon Home Choice - please keep an eye out!

Consultation to Support Most Vulnerable

Two one pound coins stacked on a five pound note. Money.

South Hams District Council has agreed that it will consult on its Council Tax Reduction Scheme for 2024/25.

The scheme is reviewed each year to provide support for residents on a low income with paying their council tax. With the ongoing cost of living crisis the District Council is firm in its aims to offer an extra helping hand to those residents who need it across the District.

The targeted consultation asks residents and partner authorities to have their say on the proposed changes to the Council Tax Reduction Scheme for 2024/25.

Totnes Residents to Have Their Say

totnes

It's nearly time for Totnes residents to have their say on whether they want to approve a neighbourhood plan for their town.

We have agreed to proceed to a referendum and if approved by the local residents, the plan will be used to help decide planning applications with Totnes.

This is one of many neighbourhood plans being developed here in South Hams. We are working closely with communities across the District to help shape the future of their areas.

Improving Follaton Arboretum

Follaton Arboretum

A long-term project to make lasting improvements to Follaton Arboretum in Totnes is close to completion.

Planting and pruning have been a key part of the works carried out at the site, which is a treasured outdoor space on the edge of the town, neighbouring South Hams District Council's offices at Follaton House.

40 varied large standard trees have been planted to complement existing trees, while several hundred whips (young trees) have also been planted to create new wildlife copses.

Extensive pruning has been carried out to open up the entrance, re-establish views and improve the health of trees at the arboretum.

We've made a video highlighting exactly what work has been done - watch it here on our YouTube channel.
