Mayor on the lookout for young green heroes

litter picking children

Do you know a young person, primary school class or youth group who are doing great things for the environment?

Enter them now for a Mayor’s Young Person Green Award!

The Mayor of West Devon, Cllr Lyn Daniel, is on the lookout for young people (aged 4 to 11) who are making a real difference. Maybe it’s an eco-school project, tree planting, litter picking, improving recycling or raising funds for green projects. Whatever it may be, we want to hear about it!

Prizes include two fantastic books, '100 things to know about saving the planet' and 'No one is Too Small to make a Difference' by Greta Thunberg.

Plus a certificate, personally presented by the Mayor.

The awards take place every two months. Enter by Friday 29 September.

We stand with Ukraine

sunflowers

Yesterday (24 August) was Ukraine Independence Day, exactly 18 months since the start of Russia’s invasion and 32 years since declaring independence from the Soviet Union.

Across the country and in West Devon, extraordinary people continue to support those who have fled the war, offering a place in their homes and communities. To date, we have welcomed 200 Ukrainians to West Devon with 73 hosts opening their homes and hearts.

Ukraine’s national flower is the sunflower – a symbol of hope, resistance, and unity; mirroring our promise to continue to stand with our Ukrainian friends.

Alongside our wonderful hosts, partner agencies and communities we will continue to support those across the Borough who are displaced by war.

Keep West Devon tidy

litter bin

With lots of visitors to the area during the summer, our litter bins can get full quite quickly.

If you go to put litter in a bin and it’s full – please take your litter home with you and get rid of it responsibly. Leaving waste beside a litter bin counts as fly-tipping.

Please help us to protect West Devon by being responsible with your litter.

You can report a full litter bin here

Be dog aware this summer

dog running

After weeks of rain, some sun is finally here and so our four-legged furry friends are out and about, enjoying the sunshine at last!

It is important that we continue to look after our loyal companions as well as ourselves, so please be dog aware.

  • Be alert – keep an eye on children around dogs.
  • Be aware – dogs will use signals to tell us how they feel.
  • Be safe – any dog can bite; accidents can happen fast.

Follow the Dog Safety code here

Have a safe and happy end to the summer season with your furry friends.
