Normacot coronavirus testing update
We want to say thank you to residents in Normacot for their responsible and rapid response to an increase in coronavirus cases in the area. Stoke-on-Trent City Council worked with the NHS to set up a temporary mobile testing centre on Friday and Saturday (14 and 15 August) and over the two days, 399 people were tested.
A total of 111 tests were carried out on Friday and 288 were carried out on Saturday.
Friday's results show that 102 people tested negative, seven results are still awaited, and two people tested positive.
The results from Saturday are expected tomorrow (18 August).
The leader of the city council Councillor Abi Brown said:
“The way we monitor data on coronavirus cases is becoming increasingly sophisticated. We mobilised quickly in response to an increase in cases in Normacot, so that people could be tested at Alexandra Infants School, in the heart of the community. The response from local residents deserves huge credit – they have acted rapidly and responsibly in a way that is typical of the seriousness with which the vast majority of people in our city are treating this horrible virus.
“People followed all of the guidance and queued in good humour to be tested. If we all respond in this way, and all continue to follow the guidance, we will defeat the coronavirus.
"Everyone who was tested has been told to self-isolate until Wednesday night, or until they get their results, if that is sooner. People won’t be contacted if they test negative.The two people who tested positive on Friday are self-isolating for 10 days and their families for 14 days. We have carried out contact tracing with them.
“The Friday results mean that in Normacot there have been 28 positive cases of coronavirus since 5 August. We use the seven-day figures for monitoring of cases, and across the whole of the city, the seven-day figure until Friday was 41 cases. This has increased; throughout July, the seven-day figure averaged around eight cases a week. Since then the seven-day figures have risen to 20 and then 40 cases. However, now the figures are beginning to plateau at around 40 cases per seven days. We can take some confidence in this, however, we know that this is a sophisticated virus and that situation can change. Our understanding of it will further improve when we have Saturday’s results from the Normacot testing.
“We must all follow the guidance, and we must all do all we can to stop the spread of the virus. By the actions people in Normacot are taking, they are not only looking after themselves, but they are looking after each other."
Booking a coronavirus test
Residents can book a coronavirus test at the local testing centre at the bet365 Stadium. It is located in Stanley Matthews Way, Trentham Lakes, ST4 4EG.
Bookings can be made via www.nhs.uk/coronavirus, or ringing 119, where help is available in other languages.
Ways to help protect yourself and others from coronavirus
All residents are reminded to continue:
- Washing your hands regularly.
- Stay home as much as possible. If you do go out, keep two metres distance from other people.
- Wear a face covering on public transport, in taxis, and in all indoor settings where the public have access, including places of worship.
- If you have any symptoms of a high temperature, a new, persistent cough or a loss of taste or smell, you must stay home and book a test. Do not come to the testing centre. If you are contacted by NHS Test & Trace, the city council or Public Health England, stay in for 14 days and limit movement household-to-household.
