Bogus Internet Calls

Problem

Local residents have been receiving calls which claim that there is a problem with their internet service.

An automated message is sent to a household's landline. This urgent message claims to be from the home's internet provider, and tells householders that their broadband connection is about to be cut off for ‘illegal usage’.

They are told to 'press 1' on their phone keypad to speak to customer services, but what they are not told is that customer services is, in fact, fraudsters posing as their internet service provider.

A fake employee then puts time pressure on the customer, threatening them with disconnection, in an attempt personal details from them.

Some conmen take this information and use it to commit fraud later. Others hook in victims immediately by encouraging them to give over bank details over the telephone.
