Liver disease is the only major cause of death on the increase.

All the other major causes - cancer, stroke, heart disease and lung disease - are decreasing, thanks to awareness and research.

The British Liver Trust is bringing a mobile scanning unit to the city centre to assess people’s risk of liver damage.

They will be supported by a team from Royal Stoke University Hospital, and offer members of the public a free Fibroscan, which measures the stiffness of the liver.

Anyone with a high reading will be referred for further tests.
