Council works to minimise M6 closure disruption

Motorists and residents in Stoke-on-Trent are being encouraged to plan ahead when the M6 temporarily closes this weekend.

Β

Highways England is upgrading the M6 in both directions from junctions 13 to 15 to a smart motorway but needs to demolish Creswell Home Farm Bridge, just north of junction 14, as part of the work.

Β

To ensure the safety of motorists, Highways England is closing the motorway in both directions for up to 24 hours from 8pm on Saturday, September 22.Β  It will reopen on Sunday 23 September as soon as work is completed, and it is safe to do so.

Β

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has held lengthy discussions with Highways England to agree the diversion and to ensure any disruption to the city’s roads and residents is kept to a minimum. Traffic will be diverted off the motorway between junctions 14 and 15 and will use the A34 Stone Road and A500 as the diversion route.Β

Roadworks carried out by other organisations

Many of the roadworks you encounter when travelling around the city won't be carried out by the city council, but by utilities companies such as water, gas or electric.Β
