New sessions for children and young adults with disabilities starting at The Brook Centre

The Brook Centre is on the site of North Staffs Special Adventure Playground in Newcastle, and Open Space is a new charity which will be running sessions at the venue. Sessions start from July 16, unless otherwise stated.

 

Tuesdays, 6pm to 8pm: club session

Our Space Juniors for children age eight to 11

 

Wednesdays, 6.30pm to 9pm: weekly social club

  • age 16 and over    
  • £5 per person, carers free
  • starts on Wednsday, July 26

 

Come along to socialise, make friends and take part in a range of activities within a friendly and relaxed environment. Drop in but if you are planning to go in a large group, let them know.

 

Thursdays, 6pm to 8pm: club session

Our Space Seniors for young people age 11 to 15

 

Fridays, 6.30pm to 9pm: club session

Our Space Plus for young adults age 15 and over

 

Saturdays, 1.30pm to 4pm: family sessions  

  • all ages
  • parents and carers stay during family sessions
  • annual membership required 
  • refreshments available or bring your own

Currently this is mostly attended by school age children and young people. There is a soft play area, outdoor area, arts and crafts activities, games and much more.


 

Space Monthly Disco, 6.30pm to 9pm

  • Saturday, July 29
  • Saturday, August 26
  • Saturday, September 23 - back to school fancy dress
  • Saturday, October 28 - Halloween fancy dress
  • Saturday, November 25
  • Saturday, December 16 - Christmas disco fancy dress

This is for people age 16 and over. It costs £5 per person (carers free) and features DJ Simeon, DJ Dan and friends. 


Refreshments will available. There is access to the outdoor area during the summer months.

Annual membership is required to attend some sessions.

ESA/PIP workshops with Potteries Gold

Potteries Gold are currently taking bookings for their workshop on ESA/PIP.  The dates have not been confirmed yet, but they are looking for expressions of interest from people who claim, carers and anyone in a supporting role in Stoke-on-Trent.

 

The workshop will be held at Hanley CAB, as soon as enough people have registered.

 

Potteries Gold can also deliver a workshop at your community venue, as long as you have six to eight people who live in Stoke-on-Trent

Staffordshire Mental Health helpline

The Staffordshire Mental Health helpline offers support to people who have concerns about their mental health, or that of someone they know.

 

The helpline is open every day of the year including evenings and weekends, and is free to contact from landlines, call boxes and major mobile networks


Customers can contact the helpline by phone, text, email or instant messaging (through the Brighter Futures website).

This service is a listening service where people can talk through their concerns safely and confidentially, exploring the options available to them, and offering emotional support where needed. The service can also offer guidance about where to find other locally-based support services.

Upset or anxious while out in the city? Look for a Safer Place

Safer Places is a list of businesses and locations in the city where people with learning disabilities or dementia, who become upset or overwhelmed while out and about, can go and people will provide a safe place for them to calm down and call a trusted friend or relative.
