A free street party is to be held in St Albans City Centre during the June bank holiday to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
More than 10,000 people are expected and attractions include live music, children’s activities and dozens of market stalls selling takeaway food and drink.
We’re organising the community event on Thursday 2 June with St Albans BID Oaklands College and Morgan Sindall being the sponsors.
The party will be centred on St Peter’s Street, which will be closed to traffic, and run from 3pm to 10pm.
It will culminate with a beacon lighting on the Museum + Gallery’s balcony at 9.45pm as hundreds of other beacons are set ablaze at key locations across the country.
Cycling tracks opened
New pump and cyclocross tracks have been opened at a St Albans community centre which is being revamped.
The tracks at the Cottonmill Community and Cycling Centre, in Sopwell, are to be managed by St Albans Cycle Hub which will be in charge of bookings and organising events.
The pump track – which can also be used by skateboarders – includes banked turns, rollers and other features.
It is surrounded by an outer cyclocross course to help cyclists practise their off-road skills on challenging terrain.
The tracks are part of a £2.7 million project by the Council to replace the Marlborough Pavilion with a new community centre. A new main building is due to open shortly.
