Helping new farmers get started
Since becoming a tenant on our 50-acre farm in Standon Bowers last October, Tom has already quadrupled the size of his flock
Tom, 34, says farming has always been in his blood. Now, he shares that passion with his children while caring for his animals and producing high-quality wool.
He said: “Getting onto a council farm is one of the only ways to start out in farming today. Land is expensive, and chances like this are rare.”
We provide 63 tenanted farms across Staffordshire, helping new and growing farmers like Tom. Our farms support local food, rural skills and the environment.
We’re proud to keep investing in the future of Staffordshire farming.

More potholes repaired across Staffordshire
Our highways crews filled more potholes last year than in each of the four previous years.
Over 37,000 potholes were repaired during 2024/25. This followed the wettest winter in more than a century, which caused more damage than usual.
To keep up with repairs, we used more crews and brought in new tools like the JCB Pothole Pro. We also introduced new AI technology to check the condition of all 4,000 miles of our road network. This helps us plan where work is needed most.
We know how important road conditions are to our residents, and it’s our top priority too. While we are doing all we can with the resources we have, we continue to call for more funding to improve our roads further.
You can report potholes and road defects using the ReportIt service on our website.
You can also sign up for our local highways newsletter to get updates about roadworks and improvements in your area.
From army to office – Paul’s new career journey
After 25 years in the Army, Stafford resident Paul Alcorn was ready for a fresh start.
With help from our Jobs & Careers Service, Paul found a new role in our Learning and Organisational Development team.
Paul knew that his military career gave him strong soft skills – he just needed a hand to transfer them. He said: “The Staffordshire Jobs and Careers Service was very helpful, with their regular updates and informed support. They gave me a real supportive veterans vibe which encouraged me to join the council.”
Staffordshire Jobs and Careers offers free support to help people of all backgrounds find work, gain skills or change careers. We also run the Open-Door Programme, offering 12-week work placements to help people get experience.
With the school holidays just around the corner, now’s the perfect time to plan some fun, low-cost days out for the whole family.
