Major resurfacing scheme at Upper Gungate starts soon
A £1.1 million highways improvement scheme is starting in Tamworth next month.
This project, at Aldergate and Upper Gungate, will see the reconstruction and resurfacing of the road between Lichfield Street and Comberford Road.
Work will also include improvements to a section of Offa Drive along with repairs to kerbs and ironworks in the area.
The scheme will begin on Monday 10 February. It will be split into five different phases that will work on one section of the route at a time.
The project is expected to take around 12 weeks to complete.
More information about traffic management and timings will be made available in the coming weeks.
Pothole repairs begin on Lichfield Street
Highways crews have begun carrying out pothole repairs on a key route in Tamworth to prepare the road to have a new top surface laid.
This work, called ‘pre-patching’, started on Monday 20 January along the B5493 Lichfield Street in Bolebridge and is expected to take around a week to complete.
Pre-patching is an integral part of preparing roads for surface dressing, a treatment that can extend the life of roads by up to 15 years.
Surface dressing can only be carried out between spring and autumn because it requires dry conditions and mild temperatures, so Lichfield Road will undergo surface treatment during this time.
Other areas in the Tamworth town area, scheduled to receive a carriageway preventative treatment this spring and summer, include:
- A0051 Lichfield Road.
- B5493 Lichfield Street.
- A0051 Anker Drive.
- A0051 Bolebridge Street.
- A0051 Tamworth Road.
- A0453 Bonehill Road
System to report potholes is revamped
The way people report potholes and other highways issues in Staffordshire has been completely revamped.
The county council’s ReportIt system has undergone a transformation to make it easier for residents to report highways issues.
The new system is more user friendly, and gives people the option of having their own account where they can track the progress of their reported issue.
In response to customer feedback, people can also now report the condition of a whole road, and the language has been made much simpler.
The system has taken a year to develop, and although it has been tested extensively, the county council is inviting people to provide feedback that will further shape the system.
Reports made to the previous ReportIt system have been transferred over, so there is no need for people to make a new report.
Keeping Staffordshire moving in winter weather
Recent heavy snowfall and icy conditions have put Staffordshire’s gritting teams to the test, and they’ve risen to the challenge. Working tirelessly around the clock, they’ve been treating roads across the county to keep drivers safe.
In Tamworth, road and weather conditions are being monitored 24/7, ensuring gritters are sent out wherever needed - from Coton Green to Wilnecote.
Drivers are reminded to remain cautious, as melting snow can create hazardous surface water, and some minor roads may be closed due to flooding.
Our highways teams remain fully prepared for winter, with a fleet of 38 gritters and over 20,000 tonnes of salt in stock. As always, our priority is ensuring the safety of residents and keeping the county moving, whatever the weather brings
Highways teams reflect on a year of hard work
As 2024 comes to an end, Staffordshire’s highways crews are celebrating a year of significant achievements.
Since April, nearly 28,000 potholes have been repaired - an average of 153 each day - and 26 major resurfacing projects have been completed, with more planned for the New Year.
Crews have also cleared over 53,000 gullies to prevent flooding and safeguard road surfaces, a 20% increase from 2023. Winter gritting efforts have seen 13,883 tonnes of salt spread across more than 126,000km of roads to keep drivers safe in icy conditions.
Between March and October, crews surface-dressed 1,705,442 square metres of road - equivalent to 239 football pitches! They also completed 762 projects, including 98 brought forward ahead of schedule.
Mark Deaville, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said: “I couldn’t be prouder of what our highways crews have achieved in 2024. This year has been a fantastic demonstration of what they can achieve with the right resources and determination.
“We would like to do even more in 2025 and, if the government is willing to fund our highways service properly, our teams are ready to fix more roads for our residents."
Works coming up...
Works continuing or coming up over the next few months include:
- B5493 Lichfield Street (January 2025)
- A5013 Upper Gungate, Aldergate (February 2025)
I want to take the time to thank you for your patience whilst these important works take place.
We are delivering a huge repair programme that will see us double down on fixing more roads across Staffordshire over the next year.
We understand that road works can cause inconvenience but they are necessary to maintain and improve our highways network. Please be assured that our crews will continue to do their best to reduce disruption as much as possible.
Happy New Year and see you next month.
County Councillor Rob Pritchard
Cabinet Support Member for Highways South
