Improvement works on Windmill Hill junction completed
Improvement works on Windmill Hill junction in Meir Heath were completed this month following a £450,000 county council investment.
The six-week scheme has seen the whole of the A520 double roundabout junction resurfaced as well as its approaches. Other improvements include repairs to kerbs, ironwork and drains.
The scheme is part of the county council's annual highways programme which was approved in March.
County councillor for Stone rural Ian Parry said: “It’s fantastic to see the junction improvements completed on schedule and we’ve already had positive feedback from local residents and people who use this route to say what a difference it’s made.
“It has been a priority for the local community and businesses to improve the Windmill Hill junction. I’m pleased as their county councillor to see a significant investment in these improvements which will give lasting durability to the road surface for potentially two to three decades.
“I’d like to thank the team for its hard work, including overnight, to get the job done.”
Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways Mark Deaville said: “This was a major scheme on a busy junction which will see lasting improvements for many years to come. It is further demonstration of our commitment to improve our road network across the county.”
Staffordshire road crews working to tidy up windswept county
Staffordshire’s highways crews worked tirelessly over the first weekend of the month to deal with the aftermath of bad weather.
Overnight on Thursday 5 December the teams dealt with extensive damage from strong winds in the north of the county, before Storm Darragh arrived later that weekend.
Crews dealt with more than 400 separate incidents during the weekend and and over a 24-hour period, took nearly 100 calls for fallen trees and flooding in the Stone area alone.
Major jobs included working with the police to remove a tree fallen on the A34 at Tittensor on Saturday evening, reopening Hartwell Lane in Barlaston after another tree fall, and working to contain flooding on the A51 by Aston Marina.
Mark Deaville, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Strategic Highways, said: “The crews worked tirelessly over a three-day period in the worst of the conditions to manage fallen trees, keep roads open and remove any danger.
“They attended between 400 and 500 incidents of fallen trees and flooding over the weekend.
“For example, by one o’clock on Sunday afternoon the staff at the Gailey depot alone had already dealt with 80 trees that had fallen on to roads.”

I want to take the time to thank you for your patience whilst important highways work takes place across the borough.
We are delivering a huge repair programme that will see us double down on fixing more roads across Staffordshire over the next year.
We understand that road works can cause inconvenience but they are necessary to maintain and improve our highways network. Please be assured that our crews will continue to do their best to reduce disruption as much as possible.
Our gritting crews will also be on hand throughout the winter, including over Christmas, to grit the roads and keep everyone moving.
So, as this is our December issue, I want to take the opportunity to wish you a very Happy Christmas, and a wonderful New Year.
See you next month.
