Explore nature through a new community trail at Perton Library!
Perton Library have been getting creative with various groups and individuals that meet at the library to develop a new nature trail for the community.
The idea of a making a trail grew out of a newly formed nature hub at the library supported by Culture Nature; a national initiative led by Natural England and Libraries Connected.
At the heart of Culture Nature is the idea that local libraries can play a pivotal role in helping individuals rediscover nature, enhance their mental wellbeing, and contribute to nature's recovery in local landscapes.
In Staffordshire, Perton Library received funding to involve people in improving public access to nature and developing new havens for wildlife through a community trail.
The project was led by local artists Juneau Projects wo have established a long-term relationship with the community through various library projects. Artists Ben Sadler and Phillip Duckworth worked with a fledgling ‘Men in Sheds’ group to help build and make wildlife havens and different elements of the trail.
Perton Craft Group, Perton First School, Library staff and visitors created visual elements to the trail, including flags and various wildlife creatures for signage using recycled wooden laser cuttings, the Art Group created designs for trail rubbings and the Creative Writing Group wrote poetry and descriptions about the local wildlife in the area as a guide.
Local green organisation Wild About Perton also supported the project and assisted with identifying wildlife that is unique to the area and helped plan a relevant route for the trail.
The trail forms a gentle 10 minute walk from the library around the local lake. A free nature trail activity guide will be available from Perton Library.
Perton Library Nature Trail will officially open on Thursday 2nd May at 11.30am and all are welcome to attend and share in the celebrations.
