Major resurfacing programme continues
Our two-year £30 million investment into Staffordshire's roads is continuing to see results, the latest being the £350,000 resurfacing of a key roundabout in Burntwood.
Works to the Burntwood Way roundabout, just off Junction T6 of the M6 Toll, took just over two weeks and included night-time working.
As well as resurfacing, the scheme included reinstating road markings, resettling kerbs, clearing footpaths and gulley cleaning. The teams also made the most of road closures to patch defects along Burntwood Way.
The investment is on top of an extra £5 million to fix defects across the country, and a further £2 million member pothole fund, which will see hundreds of lesser priority defects repaired locally.

Crews taking advantage of the good weather
Highways crews have been taking advantage of the sunny weather and ramping up their repairs over the past few weeks.
Crews have been able to repair more than 2,000 defects in June alone, with 108 of these being emergency repairs within 24 hours.
This is despite some challenging weather conditions like heat and torrential downpours.
Added to this, we are well into the preventative maintenance season, and the recent dry weather has enabled works to be completed ahead of schedule. Now, crews have treated around 125 kilometres (75 miles) of road length with 750,000m2 of treatment.

JCB Pothole Pro on its way
Highways teams at Staffordshire County Council will soon be taking delivery of the latest addition to their fight against defects—the JCB Pothole Pro.
Fresh off JCB’s production line at their Beamhurst factory in Rocester, Uttoxeter, the Pothole Pro will now undergo essential checks before it is brought into commission by the county council’s highways teams.
Crews will also undertake training on the new machine, before it is used across the county to help repair defects.
The JCB Pothole Pro is a pioneering machine that crops, planes and sweeps road defects before they can be filled with asphalt. It is just the latest innovation to be used by the county council to tackle defects, alongside other technology like the Thermal Road Repair machine. The county council is always striving to use new technology, to help keep Staffordshire's roads some of the safest in the country.

Highways goes electric
Nine new all-electric and 100% green Renault Zoes will be hitting the road in Staffordshire as part of the county council’s highways fleet.
The new vehicles, which are replacing 9 of our diesel vans, will be used by highways officers to travel around the county making their inspections.

We are always looking at ways we can reduce our carbon output in highways. Because these cars do not use fossil fuels, it is estimated that the county council will save around 75 per cent in fuel costs. The cars are also 40 per cent cleaner than a vehicle that uses petrol or diesel.
Added to this, each car will save around two tonnes of CO2 a year—the equivalent weight of two great white sharks or two of Staffordshire’s carbon bubbles—directly contributing to the county council’s carbon net zero target.
