May 2023
Welcome
Hello and welcome to the latest Highways bulletin.
Pothole priority fund
Our highways crews will be carrying out additional pothole repairs, as part of the recently announced £2 million investment into local priority defects. The money is coming from the £4 million that the county council has received from the Department for Transport’s national pothole fund.
We know from feedback from you as residents, that potholes can often frustrate our communities, and whilst this additional funding won't solve the pothole problem completely, it will allow us to address those defects around the county that are a priority within our neighbourhoods.
County councillors have been working closely with their local Highways team to agree what repairs will be delivered through the additional funding this year.
In addition to the above works, Staffordshire County Council are investing an extra £30m in highways over the next two years, which will see us deliver a number of major reconstruction schemes, junction improvements and the comprehensive repair and surface dressing of hundreds of other roads.

Major Burntwood roundabout to be resurfaced
A major roundabout near the M6 Toll will soon be undergoing a £350,000 refurbishment.
The A5195 Burntwood Way roundabout, at the junction of T6 on the M6 Toll, will undergo a two-week resurfacing programme in June.
As well as resurfacing, the scheme will include reinstating road markings, resetting kerbs, clearing footpaths and gulley cleaning. Crews will also be making the most of road closures to patch defects along Burntwood Way.
Crews will mainly work during the day, but will also be coordinating their works with a planned overnight closure of the M6 Toll junction.

Surface dressing hits the half a million mark
Our programme of surface dressing has been in full swing over the past few weeks. So much so, that we have now resurfaced more than half a million square metres of highways in Staffordshire.
Preventative maintenance is the most cost effective and environmentally responsible method to maintain our roads and helps prevent the development of potholes and other damage.
Preventative surface treatments--such as surface dressing--is fast, efficient, and causes minimal disruption to road users.
|
Following preventative maintenance works, inspections are carried out to assess the quality of the treatment and identify any issues. This includes checking for loose chippings, stone loss, rutting, and signs of premature deterioration.
Although it's rare that anything goes wrong, we can encounter certain issues; such as unfavourable weather conditions contributing to early deterioration of surface treatments, or heavy traffic loads causing some stone loss (particularly around junctions). We will always try to resolve any issues quickly, and where necessary arrange for remedial works to take place as soon as possible.
More information on our road surface treatments can be found here.

Success at the IHE Mercia Branch Awards
It was a successful night for our Highways team at the 2023 Institute of Highway Engineers Mercia Branch Awards.
The hard work of colleagues in our Staffordshire Highways Infrastructure+ partnership with Amey and other partners was recognised with two award category wins, and two highly commended at a ceremony on 18 May.
The Chetwynd Bridge Grade 2 refurbishment won the small project award, whilst i54 Western Extension won the large project award. We were also highly commended in the Highways Partnership category for i54 and the Developer Project category for the A38 (T) Branston Interchange.
This would not have been possible without the hard work and fantastic partnership working of all involved.
