Energy Arts Project Tower comes to Rugeley Library as part of Town Trail
During the Pandemic Rugeley Town Council received money from the Culture Recovery Fund to fund this project commemorating the iconic Cooling Towers. A series of towers were 3D printed from wood pulp and sugar beet. Each tower has a local theme. Rugeley Library is part of the trail and is hosting Tower 3: Economy, highlighting the local history of Rugeley and many of it’s street names.
Local Artist Kirsten Jesson worked with year 4 primary students, 2 A-Level Art students from the Hart School, and Vysions Youth Service to realise their ideas.
A Tower Trail Leaflet can be collected from Rugeley Library.
Keeping the Lights On: A History of Rugeley Power Station
In May, an exhibition called ‘Keeping the Lights On: A History of Rugeley Power Station’, marks the end of a twelve-month, County Council project researching the history of Rugeley Power Station. Rugeley Power Station consisted of two stations. ‘A’ Station was the first joint venture between the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) and the National Coal Board (NCB) and operated from 1963 – 1993. Coal was conveyed over from Lea Hall Colliery, (the mine located adjacent to ‘A’ Station), where it was then pulverised and burnt to generate electricity. ‘B’ Station operated from 1972 – 2016, meaning that the two stations operated in tandem for around twenty years, dominating the skyline with its iconic cooling towers until they were demolished in June 2021.
Whilst no longer there, the power station continues to dominate local memories, especially from those who worked at the power station. The project has captured these memories by interviewing six former station employees, ranging from station guides and security personnel, to assistant shift charge engineers. These memories span the history of the power station and comment on the privatisation of the Electricity Supply Industry and the Miners’ Strikes.
Capturing the power station’s history has also comprised desk-based research, trips to the Museum of English Rural Life, the Institution of Engineering and Technology and a morning spent with the collections at the Museum of Cannock Chase. A portion of the station’s company archives have also been transferred to the Record Office, whilst the oral history interviews will become a part of the museum collection.
The exhibition will be hosted at the Museum of Cannock Chase from 1st May – 18th June. The exhibition launch event is on 9th May at the Museum of Cannock Chase.
A pop-up version of the exhibition will also tour several libraries in the Cannock Chase area between late July 2023 and February 2024.
A mini-print, drop-in workshop to compliment the exhibition, will be run by local artist Karen Wicks on Saturday 20th May at the Museum of Cannock Chase.
All events are free to attend.
Please visit the Museum of Cannock Chase Website for more information and contact details.
