Staffordshire gears up for two Commonwealth Games events this summer

• 3 August 2022 - mountain biking event at Cannock Chase Forest. 
• 4 August 2022 - part of the cycling time trial event will be welcomed in South Staffordshire.
• 28 July to 8 August 2022 - official Commonwealth Games Festival site at Tamworth.

Both events will bring some of the best athletes in the world to our county. 

We're working with Cannock Chase Council, Forestry England, South Staffordshire Council, and the team at Birmingham 2022 to prepare for the games.

Queen's Baton Relay

Last week, hundreds turned up to watch the Queen's Baton Relay as it made its way through each district and borough around the county. 

The Baton's journey included visits to Staffordshire landmarks: Stafford Castle, the National Memorial Arboretum and Lichfield Cathedral. The baton even took to the water on a wakeboard at Chasewater and with canoeists in Stone.

The atmosphere at each event was incredible, as crowds lined the streets to cheer on the inspirational Batonbearers, who were chosen because of their contribution to their community. 

Cannock Chase Mountain Bike Event

If you haven't got a ticket, you can watch the event on BBC TV, radio and online. It will also be shown on a giant screen in Cannock town centre for free.

The trail route is public access land. Marshalls will be positioned along the route to ensure the safety of spectators and riders.

A free shuttle bus will run from Stafford rail station to Cannock Chase Forest on the day. It can be used by ticketed and non-ticketed spectators.

Keeping you moving during the Games

We expect the area around the events to be busier than usual so please plan ahead and avoid travelling at peak times if you can.

Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Festival Site

A huge three-week festival of sport and entertainment is coming to Tamworth Castle Grounds this summer after it was announced as an official B2022 Commonwealth Games Festival Site.

From July 28 to August 8 you can watch coverage of the games on a large screen in Tamworth Castle Grounds, including the opening and closing ceremonies for free.

Meet the Staffordshire athletes

Meet the Staffordshire athletes who will represent Team England at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Triple Olympic swimming champion, Adam Peaty, will be hoping to claim the 50m breaststroke at the Commonwealth 2022 Birmingham. Another swimmer, Greg Butler, who will also be one to watch, beat Peaty’s City of Derby Swimming Club records in 2018, becoming the fastest 17-year-old British swimmer ever in the 200-metre discipline.

Cyclists Dan Bigham, Hayden Norris, Josie Nelson and Sophie Capewell will race for gold as part of a 35-strong group led by five-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny. Athletics stars Ben Williams, Jazmin Sawyers and Shaun Burrows will be looking to 'Bring It Home' as they compete in triple jump, long jump and track.

Rebecca Bedford, from Yoxall, has three world championship golds to her name in badminton and will be looking to add powerlifting gold to her medal collection at this summer’s Commonwealth Games.
