Lockdown Authors

Lockdown entertainment for book lovers!

Following a successful start in 2020, our free monthly online author chats ‘A Season of Reading’ are continuing in 2021.

Our recent event on 7th January with psychological thriller author, Ben McPherson, attracted an audience of 102. Ben chatted about his novels A Line of Blood and The Island, about life as a Scot living in Norway and about the challenges and inspirations of creative writing. We will be releasing the recording of the event soon on the Book Chat group so if you missed the live event you’ll have another chance to catch it.

On 20th January at 7,30pm we will be welcoming award-winning American author, Karen Raney, to talk about her novel All the Water in the World. Optioned for film by Monumental Pictures / Lionsgate, All the Water in the World is the defiant tale of 16-year-old Maddy. Smart, funny, and profound, she has loyal friends, a mother with whom she’s unusually close, a father she’s never met, devoted grandparents, and a crush on a boy named Jack. Maddy is also dying of cancer. Told in the alternating voices of Maddy and her mother, Eve, this novel illuminates the transformative power of love, humour and hope as Maddy seeks out her first romantic relationship, tracks down her absent father and continually tests the limits of the relationship with her mother, while Eve has to come to terms with the daughter she only partly knows, in a world she can’t control.

On 3rd February, Janet Skeslien Charles will be joining us from Paris to talk about her stunning novel The Paris Library. In 1983, Lily is a lonely teenager desperate to escape small-town Montana. She grows close to her neighbour Odile, discovering they share the same love of language, the same longings. But as Lily uncovers more about Odile's mysterious past, she discovers a dark secret, closely guarded and long hidden. Based on the true Second World War story of the librarians at the American Library in Paris, this is an unforgettable novel of heroism found in the quietest of places and the power of books as a source of hope and light in the darkest of times.

Paris and libraries – what’s not to love?!

As usual, to take part in either of these author events, just ask to join our free Book Chat group via Staffordshire Libraries’ Facebook page and look out for the links to the events being posted in the group.

All our Book Chat events are run on MSTeams which can be accessed by downloading the free app to your device from Google Play for Android or the App Store for IOS. You can also access the events by clicking on the provided link and choosing the option to take part through your internet browser.

Reading Friends

Telephone Reading Friends

Staffordshire Library & Arts Service relaunched our Telephone Reading Friends programme again in November.

In libraries we appreciate what a difficult year it has been for many people but we’ve also seen the value attached to working with our communities to help people feel connected.  Telephone Reading Friends is available to support customers who are interested in books and reading but, for whatever reason, are finding it difficult to visit their local library at this moment in time.

Customers are matched with a member of library staff or a volunteer and telephone book chats take place once a week for a 4 week period.

The chats are entirely flexible in their content but will have books and reading at their core.

If you are interested in this service please email: reading.friends@staffordshire.gov.uk

Please pass on the word about this offer for anyone you think might benefit!

Holocaust Memorial Day

What is Holocaust Memorial Day?

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place each year on 27 January.

Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) encourages remembrance in a world scarred by genocide. We promote and support Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) – the international day on 27 January to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution and in genocides that followed in CambodiaRwandaBosnia and Darfur.

27 January marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

The Holocaust threatened the fabric of civilisation, and genocide must still be resisted every day. Our world often feels fragile and vulnerable and we cannot be complacent. Even in the UK, prejudice and the language of hatred must be challenged by us all.

HMD is for everyone. Each year across the UK, thousands of people come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future. We know they learn more, empathise more and do more.

Together we bear witness for those who endured genocide, and honour the survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition.
