The plans for the Heritage Lottery Funded Staffordshire History Centre are now moving at pace, with the architectural team (Pringle Richards Sharratt) incorporating comments and feedback from stakeholders and the public to shape them.

What's behind the door? Visitors find out what the William Salt Library has to hold...

The William Salt Library was inundated with visitors during Heritage Open Days Festival this year, welcoming interested members of the public through the doors to tour this Grade II* listed gem.

The ground floors of the William Salt Library building will form part of the new Staffordshire History Centre with the entire property being refurbished and renovated. The visitors loved the opportunity to discover what was 'behind the door' and it gave them a glimpse of what part of the new centre might feel like.

One visitor on a tour commented "This was my first visit, I was very impressed and I hope to return on a regular basis!" with another describing the building and collections as "Unique and wonderful!"

SHC DROP IN 'PLAY'

Drop in events to discuss the plans for the new Staffordshire History Centre were held this month, providing members of the public the opportunity to see what the centre might look like through artistic impressions, and further gain a view of what kind of activities might take place once the centre opens!

The Staffordshire History Centre will appeal to a wide range of audiences, and there will be something to interest all groups, from art exhibitions and history events, to family led activities and outreach sessions in more distant areas of Staffordshire.

View the video above to discover more about the project, or visit the Staffordshire History Centre information pages where you can download the Open Day display material.

SHC Activity

The Staffordshire History Centre project team and members of the Archives & Heritage Service have been holding a number of outreach events across Staffordshire.

The team have been visiting fetes and fairs across the county, armed with a fascinating selection of museum objects and family arts and crafts activities.

We want to reach out to talk about what the service has to offer, get to know the audiences who might visit in future, and discuss plans for the Staffordshire History Centre!

The Plan for Conservation Management...

cmp snip

We are pleased to let you know that Architectural History Practice and Kevin Bolton, consultants working on the Conservation Management Plan, have completed their work.

The Conservation Management Plan focuses on the heritage of the buildings and collection, its significance and how it should be preserved, managed and made available in the future. The project team and consultants would like to thank everyone who provided invaluable feedback and comments. The documents relating to the plan should be available to view online shortly, watch out for more news!

ABOUT THE HISTORY CENTRE PROJECT

The new Staffordshire History Centre will hold records up to 1,000 years old, as well as having a new community exhibition space, modern search rooms and strong rooms to provide storage for an additional 25 years of future collections.

The project follows months of planning and consultation with local people, history groups and local historians.

You can read the full background to the project and the overall vision for the service here, as well as access to several supporting documents.
