Good news for council homes |
|
|
In this job I've had the privilege of meeting thousands of people across our borough. In all of those conversations one topic has come up more than all the others combined - housing.
That's why I've made it the top priority for our council. It's also why I was delighted by the news yesterday that the Government will invest an extra £39 billion in building more affordable homes.
Our share of this money will mean we can go further and faster in building the truly affordable homes our community needs.
Since I became Leader of the Council five years ago we have built more new council homes in Southwark than at any other council in the country, with over 3,000 now completed or under construction.
It's not just council homes that we have been building. Last year more social rent homes - council and housing association homes combined - were built in Southwark than any other London borough.
Yet from all of my conversations I know there is still much more to do. Across London 1 in every 21 children are living in temporary accommodation, more than one in every classroom. That is something that we must never accept.
So as well as making sure we are building locally, I've also worked hard to make the case nationally for more investment in council homes. Last year I launched a report backed by over 100 councils setting out the urgent action needed. Yesterday the Government listened and acted.
The £39 billion announced by the Chancellor yesterday is about much more than bricks and mortar. It's about homes and it will transform the lives of countless families here in Southwark and across our country.
Cllr Kieron Williams
Leader of Southwark Council

Black men have a 1 in 4 chance of getting prostate cancer. It’s 1 in 8 for white men. Black men are encouraged to ask for a PSA test which can help identify if you need to be sent to hospital for further tests for prostate cancer.
You can check your height, weight, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, heart rate and more at free health check kiosks across the borough. This week we've added two new kiosks at Grove Vale Library in SE22 and Brandon Library in SE17.
