New funding for our neighbourhoods |
|
|
When landowners build homes and commercial spaces in Southwark, it’s vital they bring benefits to our community.
From local community food projects to new pedestrian crossings, a perhaps surprising number of good things in our borough are funded wholly or in part through contributions from developers.
We charge them something called Community Infrastructure Levy. All of this goes back into our borough, a lot on big projects like major improvements to Elephant & Castle station. A good slice also goes to local community projects.
And I’m very pleased to announce that we’ve just allocated a new round of neighbourhood funding from the levy - more than £5 million – that will make a real difference to our communities.
This funding includes £1 million to improve sports facilities at Marlborough Sports Garden in Bankside and up to £728,000 towards a new community hub for youth programmes at Leyton Square.
It will provide £200,000 for investment in environmental work at the Albion Channel, Rotherhithe and up to £50,000 for solar panels at council homes at Falcon Point, saving energy and helping residents to reduce their electricity bills.
Meanwhile, the Bede Centre – an important Southwark charity – will receive up to £200,000 for investment in their building to provide an enhanced service to the local community around domestic violence support. You can read a full list of all 22 projects.
We will announce more neighbourhood funding in the months to come and for as long as developers build in Southwark, we will keep ensuring that they bring benefits to our communities.
