Our brilliant town centres |
|
|
From Canada Water to Camberwell, we have some of the best town centres in London.
Each has its own special flavour. Bermondsey’s strong sense of community. Elephant & Castle and Walworth’s mix of new and old. Peckham’s vibrancy of culture and life.
We’ve backed them all, from renewing the marketplace at The Blue in Bermondsey; to delivering a new park and library at Elephant, to the beautiful upgrade to the boardwalk and dock at Canada Water. We’ve also invested over £1.4 million through our Thriving High Streets Fund.
But we know we can do more – and that’s why this week we agreed to adopt action plans for each of our much-loved main five town centres.
Each plan sets out what local people and businesses have told us that they want to see improved, and what we will do. Each will be different because every town centre is unique.
For example, our Peckham action plan will include a new approach to town centre cleanliness, local murals on Rye Lane, and completely renewed public squares outside the library and Rye Lane station.
At Elephant & Castle and Walworth we are upgrading the Tube station and East Street market, and The Blue will see a brand new multi-arts centre.
Most importantly of all, every plan will be led by local people and business. Because no one knows better than you what you need from your high streets and in your community.

We're proposing changes to our Housing Allocations Scheme to help make sure council homes go to people who need them most. You can have your say now.
We want to hear what young people in Southwark think about youth centre activities, and what type of programmes and resources they would like available at youth clubs. If you're a young person, fill in our survey by Sunday 16 March. If you're not, please share the link with any young people you know. It takes five minutes to complete, and you could win a £50 gift voucher.
We’ve promised to establish a modern centre for Black African and Caribbean elders, run by and for the community. Have your say on what services and activities the new centre should offer. You can help the next phase of this project, complete survey before 30 April 2025.

You can get free advice from the Energy Advice Centre, including how to make green upgrades to your home. They can also advise on changes you can make to save energy around your home.
Southwark Community Energy Fund gives grants to local schools, faith groups and community groups for green energy projects. This could be through building upgrades or green technology like solar panels or heat pumps. It could also be for workshops or training to help tackle fuel poverty. The fund is intended for community buildings and is not available for private residential properties. The application window will close on 6 April 2025.
