A fair wage for a hard day's work |
|
|
No one should do a hard day’s work for less money than they need to live and pay for everyday needs.
That’s why we strongly support the real Living Wage - the only wage rate based on the cost of living - now £13.85 an hour in London.
This Living Wage Week is a moment to celebrate local employers doing their bit to make sure Southwark workers get a fair wage.
Theatre Peckham, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Imperial War Museum and Tate Modern are among local theatres and cultural venues who have become accredited London Living Wage employers in the last year alone.
Those organisations and many more were supported to become Living Wage employers by Southwark Council’s Living Wage Unit, which we set up to work with local employers to help make sure people get a Living Wage. Southwark now has more than 390 accredited Living Wage Employers.
Because of this, more than 6,600 Southwark workers have now received a pay rise. The London Living Wage is an extra £4,700 a year for low-paid workers when compared to national minimum wage.
I'd like to thank all of our businesses and employers who are accredited Living Wage employers – and we’d like to hear from more who are interested in signing up (with a chance to win a £150 voucher from Bermondsey-based catering company Grazing). Paying the Living Wage is the right thing to do and also benefits everyone, both staff and employers.
Cllr Kieron Williams
Leader of Southwark Council

Canada Dock’s new boardwalk brings together the history and the wildlife that help make Canada Water such a special place. It gives people a new way to experience them close-up, which has proved really popular already with over 2,500 people at its opening event. The dock’s renewal is a key part of our plans to transform the historic London docklands location into a distinctive, new waterside town centre with thousands of new homes, shops, offices, open spaces and a brand new public leisure centre.
Over £277,000 has been invested since our latest green investment phase opened. It’s a time-limited investment opportunity that is open to anyone – when we reach £500,000 this phase will close.
Investments are long term and illiquid. Approver: Abundance Investment (Authorised and regulated by the FCA 525432). Approval date: 28 Oct 2024
You can now get grants of between £15,000 and £120,000 to improve biodiversity in your local area, like creating a new garden or a wildlife pond on your estate.
