Hello, welcome to the Dulwich community council newsletter. We hope that you’re all enjoying the hot weather we’re having this summer!

In this newsletter, there’s lots of information, events and activities happening in Dulwich and the borough. Coming really soon is our next community council meeting which is happening on Tuesday 17 July at Dulwich Library, 368 Lordship Lane, SE22 8NB.

But before we go on, didn’t our national football team do us proud! They nearly created history in Russia at the world cup. Oh well the wait continues, so how about four years time? Let’s keep dreaming!!

Crystal Palace Parade Healthy Streets Survey

Recent works on Crystal Palace Parade have introduced improved walking and cycling routes through this busy junction.

We are conducting a survey to find how people who live on the street or visit it regularly feel about it as a place to visit, stop, shop or travel through.

The questions are based on TfL's Healthy Streets approach, and your answers will help us compare this street with similar streets across London, so that we can plan future improvements for all our residents.

Safer Neighbourhood Teams

My name is Inspector Owen Pyle and I’m responsible for community and neighbourhood policing in Southwark. Your four Dulwich ward teams have been doing excellent work over the past few months – this includes identifying and arresting four males believed involved in a spate of robberies in SE21; & giving a series of safety and stranger danger presentations to primary schools in SE22. We’ve also welcomed a new ward officer to Dulwich Wood SNT, PC Lane Sharrock. He’s already been out on the ward, meeting the community and proactively patrolling.

We also welcome our policing team for the new Goose Green ward, PC Tibor Fodor, PC Mike Hughes and PCSO Teresa Kent. They’ve already spent lots of time at community events and tackling some of your ward priorities.

We rely on you, the community, to tell us what’s happening in your area. If you know of someone committing crime, please tell us and we’ll take action. If we don’t know about it, we can’t do anything. Please get in touch with your local team to report this and any anti-social behaviour, longer-term problems and local concerns.

Lost Peck Flood Alleviation and Environmental Improvement Project

Southwark Council is consulting on the Lost Peck Flood Alleviation and Environmental Improvement Scheme.

We would like to invite you to share your views on these proposals at;

This project seeks to revitalise the area surrounding the historical River Peck. The works will be delivered within Peckham Rye Park and Common and will include elements of environmental improvement and flood alleviation, weaved together through an overarching landscape strategy.

Peckham area is at a relatively higher risk of surface water flooding. The area lies within an ancient valley where the River Peck once flowed above ground. Today it is one of London’s ‘lost rivers’ as in the late 19th Century it was diverted underground to form part of the sewer network. Our investigation reveals that under extreme rainfall events, up to 200 homes and businesses could flood and this could get worse due to the adverse impact of climate change and urbanisation.

The scheme proposes to use shallow mounds and swales to hold rain water in the Park and Common during big storms in order to prevent possible flooding of properties downstream. We anticipate this will protect approximately 133 properties from flood risk.

The water held in the Park and Common will naturally infiltrate into the ground and excess water will flow back into the combined sewer network in a controlled manner within a maximum of 48 hours of a big storm.

A series of environmental improvements are also proposed across Peckham Rye Park and Common. 

These include:

• Improvement of the currently derelict historic ‘Donkey Ride’ area along East Dulwich Road.

• Enhancement of the underutilised triangular area of green space to the immediate north of East Dulwich Road, referred to as the ‘Northern Triangle’.

• Further themed environmental enhancements across the wider Common and Park including new seasonal planting and information boards, celebrating and recognising the history of the Lost River Peck.

Monday 6 August at 11.00 am: ARMOURERS’ HALL – guided tour

Coleman Street, EC2 (close to Moorgate). Join us for a tour of this beautiful Livery Hall in the heart of the City, owned by the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers. Instituted in 1322, the Guild of St George of the Armourers played a special role in the defence of the City, and its connections with the Armed Forces remain to this day. Having survived the Great Fire of 1666, the Hall was completely rebuilt in 1839; it is now Grade II listed, with a stunning blend of artefacts acquired during its long history. Thursday 16 August: KENT LIFE – by coach

Near Maidstone (next to Allington Locks). This open-air museum, one of the few places in England where hops are grown and harvested using time-honoured techniques, is celebrating 150 years of rural Kentish life. Traditional crafts are demonstrated on a 28-acre working farm, amid traditional buildings, including cottages, oast houses and barns. The 1950s are represented in the Sandling Farmhouse, and the Victorian era in Petts Farmhouse. Apple orchards, herbaceous borders, and ornamental herb gardens. Tea room and Pizza Garden. Shop. Wednesday 22 August at 3.00 pm: KEATS HOUSE – guided tour

Keats Grove, NW3 (Tube: Northern Line [Edgware Branch] to Hampstead). “Explore the life and work of John Keats through new exhibits of his original manuscripts and artefacts which tell the story of how the young poet found inspiration, friendship, and love in this stunning Regency villa.” The interior of the house, near Hampstead Heath, reflects the original decoration of the property, and is the setting which inspired some of his most memorable poetry, including Ode to a Nightingale. Tuesday 28 August at 11.00 am: WINDRUSH: SONGS IN A STRANGE LAND

British Library, Euston Road, NW1. Windrush: Songs in a Strange Land marks 70 years since the MV Empire Windrush first carried hundreds of migrants to London, and explores why they came, what they left behind, and how they came to shape Britain. The exhibition features Benjamin Zephaniah’s poem What Stephen Lawrence Has Taught Us, Andrea Levy’s novel Small Island, personal reflections from some of the first Caribbean nurses to join the NHS, and sounds of the Caribbean, from jazz to calypso music. Free. No need to book. Leave the Pensioners’ Centre at 10.00 am.
