Jobs & Apprenticeships Fair

A reminder that Peabody will be hosting a Jobs & Apprenticeship fair at Pembury Community Centre in Hackney, in partnership with Love London Working on Thursday 5th July 2018. This is a Pan London event so it is open to anyone from across London.

 We have 40 plus confirmed exhibitors at the event (including Mount Anvil, Bauer Media, MTR Crossrail, Greggs and Group M to name but a few) and covering the following sectors:

Please encourage candidates to pre-register, the registration form is quick and easy to complete. It also means on the day candidates won’t have to queue and will have quicker access to the event, employers and job/apprenticeship opportunities.

On Tuesday June 17th 2008 David Olawale Idowu was stabbed very closed to his home when playing football at the local park.  Twenty days later he died in hospital as a result of his injuries.  As with previous years, the team of Southwark Young Advisors are working with David's family  (Grace & Tim Idowu) to assist them in setting up the 'David Idowu Peace Event 2018' in memory of David and all young people lost to violent crime. This year the event will be held at Tabard Gardens SE1 on Saturday 7th July 2018 exactly 10 years since David passed away.  The event is aimed at young people and the wider community.  On the day there are performances from young local talent, key speakers etc. and the event will be attended by the parents of other young people lost to violent crime from across London.

We currently are looking for:

           Performers – singers, dancers, groups, musicians, spoken word etc.

• Funding to cover refreshments for young people (we have donations of drinks etc. from main supermarkets)
• Organisations to have stalls/showcase the work they do in the community
• Organisations to run activities  and speak with young people about opportunities.

Ledbury Summer Fete

Congratulations to Jean Te Le FC for reaching their Crowdfunding goal, with help from Southwark Council Neighbourhoods Fund and ENGIE UK who pledged £1,000 to the project. A great big thank you to friends, team members and their families who helped them reach the target. FC Jéan Té Lé is a community football club for 5 – 16 year olds based in Peckham, South London. We use football as a means to engage with young people in the community. Our aims are: • To provide a wide range of high quality football related activities • To improve members sporting and educational attainment and raise their personal aspirations • To provide long term assist & support to members participating beyond our grass root level activities i.e. Trialist/Academy/Scholarship/Professional • To use an all-encompassing approach to our activities as a means to support and improve parents, children and young people’s virtues, self-awareness, confidence, self-esteem and social and communication skills as well as health and well-being • To promote proactive parenting and active participation by parents and members • To promote community cohesion and active citizenship and to raise awareness within the wider community of the real needs of children and young people • To prioritise and ensure self-sustainability in regards to all activities running costs.

Eat cheaply, Eat well

Recipe of the month - Mattar Paneer Ingredients serves 2 You will need: 1 frying pan or pot ,preferably non-stick, veg oil, salt and pepper 1 Tbs vegetable oil 1 large onion (200g) or two small ½ tin chopped tomatoes 2 large cloves garlic 2 tsp chopped ginger 2 tsp dried fenugreek leaf (optional) – also called kasuri methi ½ tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp ground coriander powder ½ tsp chilli powder or a chilli (optional – add as much as you like) ½ cup (125ml) water 1 tsp lemon juice (can be from a bottle) 2 Tbs chopped coriander leaf (can be frozen) 125g paneer (Indian cheese) 100g frozen peas 130g rice

Mattar Paneer was the winner of our Indian subcontinent heat of our 2018 recipe vote (voted for by the students).

It is a classic Indian vegetarian curry, made with peas and paneer.  Paneer is a kind of pressed cottage cheese that can be found in major supermarkets and ethnic shops – but you can easily make your own if you can’t find it locally, using just milk and a bit of lemon juice or vinegar.  It’s quite healthy, similar to cottage cheese, and relatively low fat.

Dried fenugreek leaf gives it a really authentic taste if you can find it in Indian shops.

(Calories=525 per portion)

Cooking method

1. Chop your onions finely and put them in a pan with the oil and fry slowly to soften them for about 10 minutes, without colouring them.
2. Meanwhile crush the garlic and chop or grate your ginger, chop chilli if using.
3. When the onions are soft and translucent (at least 10 mins frying is needed), add in the tomatoes, garlic, ginger, fenugreek leaf, turmeric, coriander and chilli (if using), raise the heat to medium, and continue to fry as the tomato juice evaporates.
4. When the whole lot looks like a frying paste, and it is starting to look browner than it did before, and is starting to stick on the bottom of the pan, it is done. At this point add in the water and the lemon juice to make the gravy and stop it sticking to the pan.  Don’t add too much liquid as the fish will also give off liquid, so the sauce should be a bit thicker than you want.
5. Add some salt, around 1/8 to ¼ tsp.
6. Chop your paneer into chunks if they aren’t already, and add them in, with the peas. Mix them with the sauce and simmer gently for 10 minutes.
7. Wash and chop your coriander leaf and add in. Serve with rice.

The Community Club programme currently has 11 Community Clubs in 11 London Boroughs. Since 2013, over 650 disabled Londoners have become Community Club members, over 1400 weekly sessions have been delivered and the programme has received several accolades. 
 Role Overview 

• Permanent contract (subject to 6-month probationary period) 
• £24,000 - £26,000 per annum
• 37.5 hours a week, including evenings and weekends
• Based at Disability Sports Coach Office - House of Sport, 190 Great Dover Street, London, SE1 4YB

Key Responsibilities & Essential Criteria

• Oversee the management and development of the Community Club programme, including management of project budgets, partnerships and monitoring
• Line manage Club Development Officer(s)
• Manage and deliver 4 pan-disability multi-sport Community Clubs and Community Club events
• Minimum of 2 years experience working within disability sports development and/or club development

The Good Neighbourhood Fund

The aim of The Good Neighbourhood Fund is to support organisations working to bring people together; supporting older people, refugees and asylum seekers, and people with mental health problems.
