May 2018

Southwark Council
community council branding

Hello Bermondsey and Rotherhithe!

I have not communicated with you in a while, so my sincere apologies for that. It has been very busy with our last Community Council meeting on the 21 March focusing on the Community Infrastructure Levy and what you the local community would like to see the funds spent on and all the projects that were successful for funding for 2018/19 being officially notified. Some groups have already completed their project, like the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey Choral Society had their event on the 14th April, Soundcamp, that had their annual event over the first Bank Holiday in May and the Royal Wedding was in 19 May. There was also Mental Health Awareness week and Dementia Awareness week, the one year anniversary of the Grenfell fire and the one year anniversary for the Manchester bombing. I always say that May is the best month in the year - the only one with two Bank Holidays and my birthday!

It will also be the one year anniversary of the London Bridge attacks on the 3 June 2018 and there will be a special event marking that on Sunday

This is a resilient borough with great community spirit and Bermondsey and Rotherhithe is great.

Not forgetting the new GDPR privacy laws which are now in force so if you have any issues with how we use your data for Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Community Councils then please let me know.

The next Community Council Meeting will be on Monday 25th June. Further details to follow in the coming weeks. Hope to see you all there.

As usual, please feel free to contact me with any of your community events that you would like to promote.

HAPPY READING!

First Update from Police Inspector Owen Pyle

Hello all. I am Owen Pyle, the police neighbourhood inspector for Southwark. I am responsible for leading community policing within the borough and making sure that our teams are focusing on the issues that you want them to deal with. I am trying to attend all the local Community Council Meetings (CCMs); but I understand that not everyone can get to those, so I’ll also try and provide regular updates in the newsletter.

At the most recent CCM(March 2018), I spoke about the merger of the borough policing functions with Lambeth. This is due to happen towards the end of 2018. This comes in the context of the Met Police having to make further savings of £300 million, on top of the savings we’ve already had to make since 2010. To reassure you – this will not affect neighbourhood policing. Your local teams will remain untouched and will carry on the good work they’re doing in your area. Response policing – ie, the officers who respond to 999 calls – will also remain as they are.

As I write this, we are preparing for the ward boundary changes that happen in May. We will have all our staff in place and are recruiting 4 new PCs to the teams to cover the new wards. The vast majority of ward officers are staying on their teams. Please keep an eye on the Met Police website if you live in one of the new wards to see who your team are:

A few good news stories from your local teams and see photos attached:

-          On Friday 23rd March 2018 South Bermondsey executed a search warrant under the misuse of drugs act, at an address on Abercorn Way SE1. One male was detained at the scene where a quantity of cannabis and stolen property was recovered. This action was taken in response to concerns and intelligence provided by local community. Investigation is ongoing by PC Webster.

-          On 15th February 2018 Surrey Docks SNT conducted community sweeps of Durrants Wharf and Pearsons Park Rotherhithe Street SE16. These activities were attended by local residents. One knife was recovered.

-          Riverside SNT are working in partnership with Southwark Council, City of London Police, British Transport Police and other agencies to facilitate a developing social movement with the tag line “knives down, bikes up”. This is in response to concerns around anti-social behaviour by large groups of bike riders.

British Land submits planning application for landmark Canada Water development

British Land has entered into a Master Development Agreement with Southwark Council and submitted an outline planning application for the Canada Water Masterplan, one of London’s most significant development projects which will create a new urban centre for London.

The submission of a planning application follows four years of close collaboration between the council and British Land, and extensive consultation with the local community.

Alongside the overall Masterplan the planning submission also includes a detailed planning application for the project’s first three buildings, which include workspace, homes (of which 35 per cent will be affordable) and a new leisure centre.

These three buildings are part of a major first phase of the development covering a total of 1.8 million sq ft of mixed use space, comprising one million sq ft of workspace, 250,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space and 650 homes.  Subject to planning approvals, construction of the first buildings will begin in spring 2019. The wider Masterplan is expected to deliver up to 3,000 new homes, two million sq ft of workspace and one million sq ft of retail, leisure, entertainment and community space including proposed health and social infrastructure, and educational uses for all ages.

Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “It is fantastic to see this project moving forward. British Land have done great work to consult and engage with local people and the resulting Masterplan will deliver what local people want to see, including a guaranteed 35% affordable housing split 70% social rent and 30% shared ownership in the first phase, new retail spaces and job opportunities, education and health facilities and a brand new leisure centre. In addition British Land, in conjunction with the council, has committed to a Social Regeneration Charter which will ensure that the lives of existing local residents will be improved by the project which we believe to be a first for a project such as this.

“People will be able to see the proposals and make further comments through the planning procedure, so there is still time to get involved and help create the future of Canada Water.”

The planning application must now be validated and will be published on the council’s website in the next week. The statutory consultation on the application by the council will start after this has been completed.

Plans to mark the anniversary of the London Bridge and Borough attacks on Sunday 3 June 2018

As we approach the anniversary of the terrible attacks at London Bridge and Borough last June, Southwark Council, and Southwark Cathedral, in partnership with local and national agencies, would like to share local arrangements to sensitively remember all those who were lost and harmed, including the local community:

3pm – Service of Commemoration at Southwark Cathedral. This will be a private event, for bereaved families and victims, members of the local community, the emergency services, and all those who supported the emergency response and recovery during and following the attacks. The ceremony will include the lighting of candles by family members for each of those who died and one for all who were harmed, and the planting of an olive tree in the Cathedral grounds. The ‘Tree of Healing’ will be planted using compost made from flowers left on London Bridge after the attack and will be a permanent memorial to all those affected.

4.10pm – A procession from the Cathedral to Southwark Needle, the monument at the corner of London Bridge and Duke Street Hill to join the public (media access provided on request)

4.30pm – A national minute’s silence and speeches, followed by the laying of flowers

5pm – Close

The flowers laid at London Bridge will be left in situ for several days allowing local workers and passers-by to also pay their respects in the days following the anniversary.

The #LondonUnited ‘Book of Hope’ will be at Southwark Cathedral on Saturday 2 June and Sunday 3 June for members of the public and guests at the service to leave messages of hope and condolence. The digital book will then return to City Hall until Tuesday 19 June as part of the Mayor of London’s activity marking the anniversaries of the four terrorist attacks in London last year. This was agreed following consultation with the families who have lost loved ones, survivors, the Met police and emergency services, and the local authorities in the areas affected.

Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “The 3 June 2017 is a day that will forever be imprinted in the memories of all Southwark residents and of many other Londoners and friends from around the world whose lives tragically changed that night. The first anniversary is an emotional time for everyone involved, and we hope that all will find comfort and solace in the planned events, remembering those who were lost and also those who suffered both physical and psychological harm. But we must also be thankful for the heroism and commitment of many, many people who worked tirelessly in the hours, weeks and months that followed to support those affected, and help our borough and city to remain united in the face of such cowardice and brutality. I hope we can all stand together on 3 June to send a message to the world that we do not give in to terror, and evil will never win.”

The Dean of Southwark, The Very Revd Andrew Nunn, said: “It is a privilege to be able to host this service of commemoration on the first anniversary of the London Bridge attack. Having been at the heart of the events of that dreadful night it is right that the Cathedral is the focus for our remembering and prayers for healing and peace.  We hope that the families of those who died, those who were injured and all who were in any way caught up in the horror will find the service a source of strength and hope. The 'Tree of Healing' which we will plant will remain as a constant reminder to us all of those who were harmed but also of the importance of our communities coming together to stand against violence in all its forms.”

Plans for a permanent memorial are being developed and will be shared later this year.

Victim Support, British Red Cross and NHS mental teams will be providing support on the day, and for anyone who wishes to seek support there are many services available. More support information is available on the Southwark Council website.
