Peckham and Nunhead June 2018 (addendum)

Hi, here's a bonus...

 A few items were accidentally left out, and several more arrived too late to be included... what a dilemma. For some the July edition would have been too late, so here is an extra June edition...

FoodCycle Peckham

www.foodcycle.org.uk/location/peckham-hub FoodCycle Peckham is a local hub of national charity FoodCycle. It is a volunteer led project that cooks and serves vegetarian meals from surplus food donated by local shops - food  that otherwise would be thrown away . FoodCycle is based at All Saints Church Hall, Blenheim Grove just off Rye Lane. They have two sessions a week on a Saturday and a Wednesday. Volunteers collect and sort food and then use it to cook a delicious three course meal which is then served to guests. FoodCycle needs volunteers to help with collecting, cooking and hosting sessions. Anyone is able to come along as a guest to enjoy a warm nutritious meal in a welcoming and relaxing environment. We do not charge for the meals but any donations go towards cooking essentials that we need and don't get donated Volunteers sign up online and complete a basic food hygiene quiz before being able to select dates that they wish to volunteer. There are other foodcycle projects across London and the whole country.

As part of Employability Day 2018 on Friday 29th June 2018 we are hosting an exciting coffee morning at our Lewisham Way Campus.

The session will be from 10am – 12:30pm and will be a great opportunity to see all of the great work that is being done to support our learners.

We will have past learners who will be speaking about their success stories, a team presentation, a launch of the upcoming courses for next year, a tour of the Campus, and an opportunity to meet the Lewisham Southwark College Employment and Skills Team. It is also a great opportunity to network with our providers who support the work we do.

We will also have employers present that we work closely with who will be able to discuss opportunities and share experiences.

There will be prizes and awards presented to providers to say thank you for all the support.

More details will follow about the exciting things to come on the day.

This high profile event will promoted across social media and is part of a wider event with the Employment Related Services Association.

Please keep this date free in your diaries and let me know if you can attend. I will be sending out invites over the next few weeks once I receive confirmation of attendees.

Refugee Week

The refugee crisis hasn’t gone away.

Millions of refugees are still trapped in camps in Turkey and the Middle East, locked out of Fortress Europe. Thousands drown in the Mediterranean. And the situation for refugees in Calais and Dunkirk is worse now than two years ago. In Britain , the “hostile” environment” for immigrants means 30,000 people in detention centres, destitution for asylum seekers and the shocking treatment of the Windrush generation.

Join us to discuss this continuing crisis.

For one weekend only we'll finally be opening all 7 levels of the multi-storey carpark for a chance to explore over 55 studios and workspaces as well as an opportunity to meet some of the buzzing creative community that makes up ‘Levels’.

Perform with Extraordinary Bodies

Award-winning circus company, Extraordinary Bodies are offering a unique and exciting opportunity to perform with them in their latest groundbreaking and fully accessible show, What am I Worth?

Extraordinary Bodies create bold, radical and joyous performance which increases national awareness of the integration of D/deaf, disabled and non-disabled artists working equally together. They are looking for quick learners with good listening skills and stamina of the mind and soul to learn a floor based movement sequence and create their own celebration scene alongside a diverse range of people. Conventional physical fitness and previous performance experience are not necessary.

Participants will need to be available all day for rehearsals from 8 to 11 August 2018. The final performances will be on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 August at the National Theatre. For more information and to get involved email Eilis Davis: eilis@diversecity.org.uk.

Kate Newby (*1979 in Auckland, New Zealand) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. In 2012 she was awarded the renowned Walter’s Prize. Newby graduated with a Doctor of Fine Arts (2015) from the University of Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Arts. Her solo exhibitions include I can't nail the days down, Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2018) Swift little verbs pushing the big nouns around, Michael Lett, Auckland (2018); Let me be the wind that pulls your hair, Artpace, San Antonio (2017); The January February March, The Poor Farm, Wisconsin (2016); Two aspirins a vitamin C tablet and some baking soda, Laurel Doody, Los Angeles (2015); I feel like a truck on a wet highway, Lulu, Mexico City (2014); Maybe I won‘t go to sleep at all., La Loge, Brussels (2013); and Let the other thing in, Fogo Island Gallery, Newfoundland (2013); among others. Her works have also been shown in international group exhibitions, including at the 21st Biennale of Sydney (2018); Scrap Metal, Toronto (2017); Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, Stockholm (2017); Sculpture Center, New York (2017); Casa del Lago, Mexico City (2015); Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, Auckland (2015); and Arnolfini, Bristol (2014).

Funding opportunities

There are two funding opportunities that have been released by London Sport and the London Mayor’s office. They offer opportunities to gain funding for young people to do activities, though their criteria is different. Do have a read of the details for each opportunity and if there are any questions that you want some support on, then contact the Southwark Council sport and physical activity team on sports@southwark.gov.uk

Applications are now open for the Young Londoners Fund and the Sport Unites Small Grants Fund.

Application deadline: 12-noon, Monday 9 July 2018

£15 million from the Young Londoners Fund and £500,000 from the Sport Unites Small Grants Fund are now available for projects that support children and young people (aged 10-21) across London, who are either at risk of exclusion or involvement in criminal activity or have been involved in criminal activity.

Projects must be embedded in their local communities and will be delivered through a range of innovative and proven delivery models.

Volunteering for Link Age Southwark brings many rewards. From visiting someone who is really keen to have a friendly chat once a week, driving someone to our groups, helping with light diy and gardening to assisting at our activity groups. Giving some of your time could make a big difference to the life of our older friends and neighbours. Community Cycleworks

Here is s short excerpt about the Build a Bike scheme delivered by Community Cycleworks... a really excellent project. Thanks to a generous grant from Peckham and Nunhead Community Council, the Community Cycleworks (CCW) team were able to deliver a very successful community Build a Bike (BAB) event on 28 March 2018, preceded by two community bikefix sessions (30 Sept and 28 Feb). One at Peckham Rye Adventure playground and the other at Nunhead Green Community Centre. The bikefix sessions were designed to provide DIY mechanic support to people who brought their bikes in, assisted by our team of experienced bike mechanics. The sessions were also sign-ups for the Community BAB in March. CCW has been sucessfully running BAB in Southwark schools for the the past four years, and has done one previous community BAB, on the Aylesbury Estate and at our Burgess Park workshop, in 2016.
