The next round of community council meetings will start in June 2018, if you have local issues that you think should be discussed, please let us know... the themes for the next round will broadly include: Local History; Education; Public Space; and Regeneration...

AAINA is based at the Sojourner Truth Centre on Sumner Road, and provides networking and support opportunities for women of all ages.

Level 2 awareness of Mental Health problems.

In partnership with the Skills network and fight4change is this FREE online course in which Participants will gain a Level 2 certificate in Awareness in Mental Health problems.  

The qualification is suitable for learners who wish to increase their knowledge of Mental Health problems, the factors that cause mental ill-health and the ways that mental health problems can be managed. The course is also suitable for anyone who already works in this area, anyone who wants to secure a job linked to mental health and anyone who wants to gain more knowledge for personal reasons.

Peckhamplex

Dear Friends of Peckhamplex,

Peckhamplex was well represented at the London Marathon, the hottest one on record, by FOPP Joanna Brown, Police Constable City of London Mounted Division, who completed the course in 5 hours 14 minutes – despite being pushed over.

Brilliant running and thanks, Joanna! That was a great effort on our behalf. You can get back on your horse Lionel now and let him do the running.

Digital Support Service

We want to tell you about our new Digital Support service which has been set up with the support of Southwark Council Tenants Fund.

We are now running regular Digital Support sessions at various locations throughout the borough where people who live or work in Southwark can get free help and support if they are having difficulty getting online. Our staff and volunteers are available on the sessions to guide people through online systems including:

• Making and managing your Universal Credit claim online
• Setting up a MySouthwark account including registering for Homesearch
• Online Bidding
• Making a change in your circumstances

We have also set up an agency referral appointment system that you can use to help the people you deal with get online and get net savvy. If you work for an organisation and wish to refer a client, please click here.

The five Community Councils in Southwark are an important part of the council`s decision making process and are a focal point for discussion on local matters. The 5 Community Council areas are:

• Bermondsey & Rotherhithe
• Borough, Bankside and Walworth
• Camberwell
• Dulwich
• Peckham & Nunhead

The community councils hold public meetings, about 5 times a year, where local people can meet with each other and ward councillors to discuss key issues of concern, and help influence decisions on matters of local interest such as traffic management, community safety and environmental improvements.

Purpose of a Community Council Volunteer

We are looking for 5 volunteers to support the community council meetings in each of the neighbourhood areas by providing assistance to the Community Council Officer at community council meetings and other relevant events in the local area.

 What will a Community Council Volunteer do?

• Welcoming people at the meeting
• Helping with the reception and registration at the Community Council meeting
• Participate in the external events with the CCO
• Monitoring of attendance  at the meeting
• From time to time, attending a walkabout of the area with the Community Council Officers to visit projects in the neighbourhood

Who would the role suit?

Anyone over 18 living in one of the Community Council Areas

Someone with good people skills who is friendly and has good communication skills

Anyone interested in promoting local social action

Anyone interested in communities and councils

Be able to commit to minimum of 3 months volunteering

We are pleased to announce that the Trust has now launching its new grant programmes, Bridging Divides. This follows an extensive review of its charitable funding and will see around £100m distributed over the next five years to tackle inequality across London.  

The Trust’s three new grantmaking priorities are: Connecting the Capital: Making London’s communities stronger, more resilient and enabling them to thrive. 

Positive Transitions: Work that will enable Londoners experiencing inequality and disadvantage to make important transitions in their lives. 

Advice and Support: Providing access to good quality advice and support in order to reduce & address inequalities.  These priorities will help to achieve the Trust’s vision for London to be a city where all individuals and communities can thrive, especially those experiencing disadvantage and marginalisation. 

As well as these new priorities, we will also be adopting a fresh approach to how we work with London’s civil society.  

Firstly, to provide organisations with greater certainty, we will offer revenue funding grants of up to five years. We will also be offering to fund core costs as we recognise that these can be difficult to fundraise for. 

Secondly, we will be offering different types of funding, starting with a small grants programme which is open for applications immediately. Over the next five years we will also be exploring other options, including social investments and blended finance. Whilst these will not be right for every organisation, we want to be innovative and open-minded as to what we can offer. Finally, we will be looking at how we can make best use of all of our assets as a funder, including our networks, knowledge and links to the public and private sectors. We are once again on the look-out for a talented multi-tasker with experience of recruiting and working with volunteers. We are looking for someone with a passion for the arts and audience engagement, possesses great planning and organisational skills, is pro-active, decisive and above all good humoured. They will be responsible for advertising, recruiting, training, assigning and managing of all of volunteer roles during the 3-day festival, and will be integral to the core festival team as Volunteer Manager. Catch up with Jean Te Le FC

I volunteer with a local community football club called FC Jéan Té Lé, who are based in Peckham and have over 300 members aged between 5 and 16 years old. The club has been running since 2011 and all our coaches volunteer their time. We use football as a means to engage with kids and young adults, so that they can become great citizens and great footballers. 

As with all other community groups, we are always on the lookout for funding and volunteers, but both are in short supply these days. We charge £20 per month per member and that pays for 6 hours training, 3/4 matches per month and travel to and from the matches. Our membership fees barely cover our costs and most of our money is eaten up by venue rental. If we want to develop our club and our members, we also need to develop a way to raise more funds. We apply to many, many, funds, but the successful applications are few and far between. 

Recently we were successful with a funding application to Southwark Council and they suggested that we take a look at a crowd funding site called SpaceHive, as other Southwark groups had been able to fund their projects this way. The site is very user friendly and it didn’t take much time to get up and running. The staff at SpaceHive were also very helpful. We made a video, added some photos and printed business cards with a QR code, that could be scanned and would take you to our SpaceHive page. It was then just a case of getting out and about and spreading the word.  

Crowd funding is no quick fix, you still have to be prepared to put in the work, but it is a great way of raising money for specific projects that you can go back to again and again. Also, as a club, it makes us feel a little more self sufficient and less dependent on this rare, successful funding applications.

Jobs Fair for National Employability Day – June 29th   Thames Reach Employment Academy will be hosting a fair with over 20 employers in attendance. Update from Road Transport Policing Command Southwark

CRW (Community Road Watch) is where members of the community get involved with road management in terms of being trained to use traffic management measurements and associated kit 

from Tuesday 24th April there will be two dedicated officers assigned to CRW Those officers are PCSO Gail Ireland 6035T -  Gail.Ireland@met.pnn.police.uk and PCSO Kevin Phillips 7131T - kevin.J.Phillips@met.pnn.police.uk Their role will be to manage and deliver all aspects of CRW 

To begin with their main focus will be

·        Booking road watch events

·        Emailing and updating all volunteers

·        Attending road watch events

·        Sending results to TFL

·        To build a larger volunteer base by attending meetings and Community events

Gail and Kevin will also be sending out May's Community Road Watch dates

HourBank Trips

May's Oyster trip will be to Victoria Park, Grove Rd in East London.

Victoria Park is one of London’s most important historic parks and its oldest public park, visited by millions of Londoners for nearly 170 years as a place of healthy recreation, sports, play and relaxation.

The park is the largest in Tower Hamlets at 86.18 hectares and has one of the highest visitor numbers of all the London parks with around 9 million visits per year. A wide range of formal and informal sports, sponsored activities, events and festivals take place throughout the year.

Meet at Pecan at 10am on the last Friday of the month (25th May). 
 

National Waiters Day

SHARE WHAT YOU KNOW Do you, or someone you know, have stories from Peckham’s present or past to preserve for the future? The South London Gallery in partnership with the Peckham Townscape Heritage Initiative are looking for people to share their memories and experiences of living around, working on or using Peckham’s Rye Lane. Whether you’ve known Rye Lane for 6 months, or 60 years, we’d love to hear from you! You will be connected with a team of trained and experienced volunteers and your oral history may be presented in the SLG’s Archive, launching in September 2018. The project is particularly interested in supporting otherwise underrepresented histories to be told.
