Have you tried Walking Football?

Athenlay FC

We at Athenlay Football Club are pleased to announce that with the support of Sport England, we are starting of a new Walking Football program for over 50’s @ the Homestall Road Sports Ground.

The program runs every Tuesday from 13th March, from 10am to 11:30am and is free to attend.

Walking Football is a slower version of the game and has become extremely popular over the last few years.  The game is designed to help people keep an active lifestyle despite their age and fitness and this program is the first of a series of programs planned by Athenlay Football Club & Homestall Leisure to use sports as tool of social engagement to help local people to have the opportunity to live an healthier lifestyle.

Older people who play have seen many benefits; lower heart rate and blood pressure, less fat and more muscle and better mobility.

As well as offering health benefits walking Football offers social benefits - the opportunity for participants to meet new people, prevent isolation and create interaction for individuals and small groups.

Help for Creative students

Students from Ark All-Saints Academy, in Camberwell, celebrated the launch of the council’s new Arts Bursary scheme, with Harriet Harman MP, Cllr Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for Business, Culture and Social Regeneration and Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, on 20 February.

The new bursary scheme reflects the values of the council’s Cultural Strategy, which puts creativity at the heart of everything the council does. Southwark Council will be working with the University of the Arts London, specifically Camberwell College of Arts, responding to the drop in the number of young people taking creative GCSEs, especially those from less affluent families.

The council has committed £25,000, to provide ten bursaries of £2,500, for students coming to the college from neighbouring Southwark secondary schools.

The bursaries will provide an incentive for young people to consider arts subjects at the college. They will help to cover the cost of materials, trips to exhibitions and necessary technology for the course, during the 2018/19 academic year.

Applicants must meet the university’s criteria as being in need of financial support and have completed studies at one of four Southwark secondary schools*.

Bermondsey to Peckham Quietway Consultation

Visualisation

We are consulting on a proposed new Quietway between Bermondsey and Peckham, and we would like to hear your views.

Quietways are part of a London-wide programme to implement a network of continuous and convenient cycle routes on less-busy streets across London. We design our Quietways in accordance with Healthy Street principles, intended to make our roads healthier and safer for all road users, especially pedestrians.

This Quietway is planned to run from Bermondsey down to Peckham Road, running along Glengall Road, Trafalgar Avenue and Sumner Road. We hope it will provide a safe alternative cycling route to the Surrey Canal Path, as we know this can sometimes become crowded with pedestrians and cyclists.

You can see the plans at http://southwark.gov.uk/bermondseytopeckham where you can also submit your comments via our online form. The deadline for responses is 12 March.

We’re also holding a drop-in session where you can talk to the designers, at Burgess Park Community Sports Centre, 106 Cobourg Road SE5 0JB on Tuesday 27 February 6-8pm.

If you require a hard copy, email highways@southwark.gov.uk, call 020 7525 2347, or write to us at FREEPOST RSCT-BHXK-SCAJ,

It’s lovely to see how much you’ve slipped into Black Panther’s own unique universe. Amazingly, it flew off the blocks in the UK this weekend and grossed more than £10.5m at the box office. And also good to see you enjoying The Shape of Water, a magical creature feature,  with love between an amphibious creature from the Amazon and the sublime Sally Hawkins. It won director Guillermo del Toro a BAFTA Award for his lush, literally immersive, incurably romantic fish out of water story.

You can see BAFTA Best Actress Frances McDormand in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and BAFTA Best Actor Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour. Both still playing at The Plex.

New Films

RED SPARROW (15)
Thursday 1st March 21:00

Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) is drafted against her will to become a “sparrow,” a trained seductress in the Russian security service. Joel Edgerton, Mary-Louise Parker, Joely Richardson, Jeremy Irons and Matthias Schoenaerts co-star. 140 mins.

LADY BIRD (15)

This lovely small but perfect film, written and directed by Greta Gerwig (Jackie), is a modest, at times hilarious coming of age story starring Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) as the difficult teen of the title who has somewhat different ideas on her future than her mother (Laurie Metcalf from Roseanne) does. 93 mins.

I, TONYA (15)

Margot Robbie rehabilitates notorious former Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding in this black comedy drama. (Harding was prosecuted in 1994 for an attack on her team rival Nancy Kerrigan.) Harding’s appalling mother is played by Alison Janney (West Wing) who won a Bafta for her performance this week. Robbie is astounding as a skater and Janney is perfect as a vile mother. 119 mins.

being blacker

We hope you’ll join us on Sunday 4th at 18.00 for BEING BLACKER (18), a film by award-winning documentary maker Molly Dineen. This portrait of Afro-Caribbeans in South London will jolt those who think that multiculturalism is working for all. Being Blacker follows a tumultuous few years in the life of Steve Martin, aka Blacker Dread, a pillar of the Afro-Caribbean community in Brixton. Observational and bursting with big characters and vibrant detail, this film is a rare surprise and unexpected treat.

The screening will be followed by Q & A with star Blacker Dread and Dineen.
