Diabetes can affect the small blood vessels in the part of your eye called the retina. This is known as diabetic retinopathy. Regular screening for diabetic retinopathy is essential to help prevent sight loss from diabetes. What is diabetic retinopathy?Diabetic retinopathy means changes to the retina (the seeing part at the back of the eye) and is a complication that can affect anyone with diabetes. It is treatable, but may have no obvious symptoms, so you might not know you have it until it is well advanced. You can find lots more information about the condition on the NHS Choices diabetic retinopathy pages. Screening for diabetic retinopathyGuy’s and St Thomas’ provide the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme for people living in south east London. We screen the eyes of people with diabetes to detect the early stages of diabetic retinopathy using special digital cameras. Most people have no signs of diabetic changes but must be seen each year to ensure this remains the case. There is a national screening programme for diabetic retinopathy and all people with diabetes should have their eyes screened regularly. Screening clinicsScreening takes place in several locations. See the clinics page for more information. Become a member!![]()

Southwark residents may not know it, but many are now helping vulnerable families in south London by bringing essential baby items to the Reuse and Recycling Centre. Veolia in Southwark have partnered with the Salvation Army Baby Bank in Camberwell to help boost the supply of reusable items to families in need. The Baby Bank, run by Janet Martin, supports babies and families in need by providing good quality second-hand baby clothes, cots, buggies and other essentials such as baby milk.
Veolia staff at the Southwark Reuse and Recycling Centre off Old Kent road now collect and sort reusable baby items, brought into the centre by Southwark residents, before delivering them to the Baby Bank each month. Local families are then able to access items that they would not otherwise be able to afford. Veolia has delivered countless cots, stair gates and toys since the launch of the partnership, but there are still many families waiting for essential items such pushchairs and Moses baskets. With around a third of children in Camberwell born into low income families, Southwark residents can make a huge positive impact to the community by bringing their unwanted goods to the recycling centre. What is Modern Slavery?
Modern Slavery takes a number of forms including sexual exploitation and forced labour. Often the person is forced or compelled to work and they are often controlled by an 'employer', usually through mental or physical abuse or the threat of abuse. Signs that someone might be a victim of modern slavery include:
- Show signs of injury, abuse and malnourishment
- Look unkempt, often in the same clothing and have poor hygiene
- Be under the control and influence of others
- Live in cramped, dirty, overcrowded accommodation
- Have no access or control of their passport or identity documents
- Appear scared, avoid eye contact, and be untrusting
- Be collected very early and/or returned late at night on a regular basis
- May have inappropriate clothing for the work they are performing, and/or a lack of safety equipment
- May be isolated from the local community and their family
It can include victims that have been brought from overseas, and vulnerable people in the UK, being forced to illegally work against their will in many different sectors, including brothels, nail bars, factories and agriculture.

A reminder about this open house event during National Apprenticeship Week – amazing opportunities with Group M for people keen on a career in the media/marketing industry – no age restrictions. Please promote to organisations/ schools/ colleges and individuals in your networks.
As National Apprenticeship Week is approaching and people you are working with are considering their career options we would like to invite them, their parent(s) and yourselves to an open house at Wavemaker on Wednesday 7th March between 4pm and 7pm. Last drop in time 6.20pm.
It is a drop-in style open house event which will give your students the opportunity to visit our stunning offices and experience the award winning work we do as a newest agency within GroupM family and the media industry. The visitors will get to interact with our current apprentices and participate in activities typical for a media agency, they will learn more about Wavemaker and our Wavemaker Wanted Apprenticeship Programme. The event will hosts 6-8 exhibition style stands with two pop up presentations ( @4.30pm and @6.00pm) where all visitors can discover more about how to apply to our industry leading apprenticeship scheme. The Future Talent recruitment team will be onsite offering 1-2-1 mock interviews.
This is a unique chance for the students and their parents/ advisers to learn more about media and Wavemaker and what possible career routes they can take within the $500bn media advertising industry.
Please find the invite for the event attached. Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis aiming for a mix of people attending from a number of schools, colleges and other partners. So we would encourage all the sixth-formers attending to RSVP through the link in the invite (alternatively send through the list of attendees from your school directly to me).
