Welcome to the Dulwich community council newsletter for November. This month we're meeting on Wednesday 1 November 2017 for the Dulwich community council "Travel and Transport" themed meeting. For details on this and other useful information, see below!

Knife Crime Community Fund

The Home Office has launched a new Community Fund to support community projects which reduce knife crime and have a positive impact on young people at risk of carrying a knife and committing crime. The fund is open to voluntary and community sector groups only and the Home Office has made £500,000 available in 2017 to 2018.  We are inviting bids for funding for projects of up to £20,000 although we will consider bids for greater funding for projects with collaboration between partners.

Back Southwark’s bid for London Borough of Culture

In February next year two London councils will be awarded the title of London Borough of Culture; one for 2019 and the other for 2020. Each winning borough will receive more than £1million from the Mayor of London and will run a huge and exciting programme of cultural events, that will feature the talents of both global superstars and local people, within its year.

Everybody knows about established, international centres like the Tate Modern, White Cube, Shakespeare’s Globe and Old Vic. But fresh new talent from up-and-coming artists can also be found at the Hannah Barry Gallery, Southwark Play House, Seen15, CGP London and other vibrant, burgeoning hubs of art and creativity across Southwark.

To gain the title of London Borough of Culture we will need the backing of all the amazing talent showcased across the borough. But more than that we will need to uncover the hidden work of unknown artists and inspire people to explore their untapped creativity.

Southwark Conversation

Southwark, like the rest of London, is changing. The council wants this change to work for all our residents – to help you and your families enjoy life, be healthy and thrive in Southwark.

With or without the council, the next few years will see new developments and buildings, new businesses and technology, and an ever-changing skyline. Southwark’s population will also continue to change, as more people choose to make our borough their home.

We have been bold in our plans to encourage home building and, with rapidly reducing budgets, finding ways to make sure private developers help pay for the thousands of new council homes we are building, the new leisure centres and libraries we have opened, and new cultural and open spaces.

We are also helping residents to take advantage of the opportunities around them, and have helped 5,000 people into work, as well as creating nearly 2,000 apprenticeships for local people. We’re also ensuring that as our population grows, we have the new schools, health services and transport improvements that our residents need – despite massive cuts in funding from national Government.

But we don't want to make assumptions - we want to build on previous consultations to make sure we're getting it right for you and your families now, and for future generations. We want to hear direct from our residents about how the changes are affecting you, how you feel about the future, and whether there's anything you think we can do differently.

While we don't have a magic wand, and the Government, the Mayor, the NHS and the private sector all play an important role in influencing our lives, the council does have some powers and levers that we can use to help make Southwark an even better place to live, work and play than it is today.

We want to hear from you - please take a few minutes to fill in our questionnaire, and come and speak to us as we travel around the borough on our most far reaching engagement with the people who live and work in Southwark.

Southwark Remembers 2017

The borough’s arrangements to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day 2017 in Southwark are as follows:

Remembrance Sunday

The official borough service for Remembrance Sunday will take place at Saint Saviour’s War Memorial, Borough High Street, London SE1, on Sunday 12 November 2017 at 10.45am, ahead of the nationwide two minute silence at 11am. 

It will be led by The Right Reverend Andrew Nunn, Dean of Southwark.

Guests are asked to assemble by 10.30am

Armistice Day  

The official borough service for Armistice Day 2017 will take place at West Lane War Memorial off Jamaica Road, London SE16, on Saturday 11 November 2016 at 10.45am.

Help raise awareness of bullying on Wear Blue Day – 10 November 2017

As you know the effects of bullying can have a massive impact on all individuals, whether at school, work, college or socially. The impact of bullying can last a lifetime.

Bullying UK, part of Family Lives, works all year round on anti-bullying campaigns, and provides support to those who are experiencing bullying through our helpline and online advice. We will be running our successful Wear Blue Day for the third year and we would like your school to be involved and help raise awareness of bullying.

Wear Blue Day can be anything from a blue dress-down day, blue jeans, blue top or you could wear something adventurous and stand out for bullying! It is very simple, all you have to do is wear something blue and pop a pound (or more) in a bucket! You can also purchase our Bullying UK blue wristbands as part of your day too. (Wristbands are 50p each incl VAT, minimum order of 50. P&P is extra).

16 - 25 years - Interested in Game Design?

Lively Minds over 60’s group

Lively Minds are an over 60's group that meet every Tuesday during term time at St Faith’s Community Hall, Red Post Hill, SE24 9JQ. We start at 12pm where we serve tea and coffee until 1pm. For food we advise that you should bring a packed lunch.

We have a speaker every week from 1.45 to 2.45pm and an outing usually once a month from April to December.

The speakers we have planned for November are:

• 7th  November – The Rubbish Pickers Wife with Elizabeth Gowing
• 14th November – RSBP Water birds with John Lawrence
• 21st November – Royal Bodyguard with Richard Griffin
• 28th November – Last Empires/ the Last days of Music Hall with Wilf Lower

Here are some of the activities Southwark Explorers have planned over the coming weeks:

Thursday 9 November at 6.00 pm: YOUNG ARTIST SHOWCASE RECITAL

Royal Festival Hall SE1. An early-evening concert by recipients of the Philharmonia MMSF Instrumental Fellowship Programme “showcasing the next generation of orchestral talent, in a varied programme of chamber repertoire.” No need to book. Take a seat in the auditorium, or meet outside the Level 2 shop at 5.30 pm. Free.

Monday 20 November at 10.30 am: BOROUGH MARKET & RIVERSIDE WALK

Bus: 35 or 40 from Camberwell. During our visit, Harry will lead a riverside walk, with stunning views, in the area that has the longest known history of any part of London apart from the City. A market at Borough, with its strategic riverside location, has been in place for over 1000 years, and trading on this part of the River Thames dates back to Roman times. The numerous attractions in the area include the Tate Modern and Hay’s Galleria, with St Paul’s across the river. There is a huge range of places to eat, drink and shop. No need to book. Leave the Pensioners Centre at 10.30 am. Free.

Monday 4 December at 11.30 am: BALENCIAGA: SHAPING FASHION

Victoria and Albert Museum, Cromwell Road SW7 (Bus: 360 from the Elephant & Castle to South Kensington). This acclaimed exhibition at the V&A celebrates the ongoing impact on the fashion world of the legendary Spaniard, Cristóbal Balenciaga. Referred to by his fellow designer Christian Dior as "the master of us all", Balenciaga is famed for his innovative silhouettes and garment construction. He dressed some of fashion’s most iconic women - from Ava Gardner to Jackie Kennedy. Shop. Cafés. The Club is charging just £6.00. Sunday 10 December at 3.00 pm: CHRISTMAS CLASSICS

Royal Festival Hall SE1. Philharmonia Orchestra, Bach Choir and The Young Singers Children’s Choir. This afternoon’s concert of classics and carols will include Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols, Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker Suite, and Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel Overture. Rear balcony (some steps) tickets are £15.60. but the Club is charging just £12.00. To book, please return the enclosed slip with payment by 13 November.

Friday 15 December at 11.00 am: ALL HALLOWS BY THE TOWER – tour

Byward Street, EC3 (Bus: 42 across Tower Bridge). Join us for a guided heritage tour of the beautiful All Hallows by the Tower, founded in 675, and the oldest church in London, with longstanding connections to a number of City Livery Companies. Inside is a 7th-century Saxon arch with recycled Roman tiles, the oldest surviving piece of church fabric in the city. The Crypt Museum contains portions of a Roman pavement, discovered many feet below the church in 1926, while the exhibits focus on the history of the church, its people and the City of London, and include Saxon and religious artefacts. Tuesday 19 December at 12.00 noon: YOUNG MARX

East Dulwich Picturehouse. Broadcast to cinemas from SE1’s recently opened Bridge Theatre, this new comedy stars Rory Kinnear (The Threepenny Opera, Penny Dreadful, Othello) as Marx, and Oliver Chris (Twelfth Night, Green Wing) as Engels. “It’s 1850, and Europe’s most feared terrorist is hiding in Dean Street, Soho. Creditors, spies, rival revolutionary factions and prospective seducers of his beautiful wife all circle like vultures ...” The Club is charging just £12.00.
