universal credit

Universal credit delays

Southwark is one of the first areas in the country to see the rollout of Universal Credit. At the recent Work and Pensions Select Committee held in September, Cllr Fiona Colley highlighted the council’s concerns about the significant levels of rent arrears for social housing tenants moving to Universal Credit and the recommendations the council has put forward for improving the system. Watch the evidence session here and you can find out more about Universal Credit here.

fireworks

Bang… don’t miss our free bonfire fireworks night

Our spectacular annual fireworks display will return for its fourteenth year, in Southwark Park, on Sunday 5 November which attracts around 30,000 people every year.

The council is keeping the event free for all Southwark residents but you need to book a ticket(s) online. Tickets will be free for people who live in Southwark but due to the popularity of the event for those that live outside the borough will have to pay a small fee.

Gates will open at 5pm, with food, drink and entertainment available until 8pm. Last entry to the park will be at 6.30pm. Ticket holders are strongly advised to arrive as early as possible. Tickets will be available on a first come first served basis so residents are encouraged to book tickets online early to avoid disappointment.

Black history month2017

Black History Month

Black History Month has been celebrated widely for many years celebrating the culture and history of black people.

In Southwark, Black History Month has been recognised for over 20 years with a month long programme of exciting events and workshops throughout October hosted by schools, libraries, groups and organisations.

Further information is available on our website where you can view all the latest events in the Black History Month brochure or pick up a copy at your local Southwark library.

Ledbury estate update

There has been a lot of publicity surrounding structural problems on the Ledbury estate in Peckham, where the council has had to turn the gas off to the four tower blocks for safety reasons. There is evidence that the work that should have been carried out to strengthen the blocks when they were owned by the GLC in the 1960s/70s may not have happened. We continue to work with residents and are in the process of replacing their gas appliances with electrical ones, alongside installing a temporary district heating system for heating and hot water. We will be developing longer-term plans for the blocks once structural engineers have completed their survey later this year. Click here for more information.
