Purple Flag Accreditation Success

Southend-on-Sea retained the Purple Flag accreditation for the 12th consecutive year. The Purple Flag accreditation is recognition of its commitment to creating a dynamic, secure, and vibrant evening and night-time economy. Purple Flag – similar to the Blue Flag for beaches – aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 6 pm to 5 am. This prestigious award highlights Southend-on-Sea's blend of entertainment, dining, and culture, all while ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and visitors in the evening and night time economy. Key successes in Southend-on-Sea's submission include the strong partnership that has been built and strengthened in recent years, the excellent work on the safety and care agenda, including use of CCTV and initiatives such as “Safe Spaces” and distribution of drink check wristbands. 

City Day Celebrations

Southend City Day marks the anniversary of Southend-on-Sea being granted city status in 2022. It is a
celebration designed to boost civic pride and bring the community together. The day recognises the city’s unique heritage, cultural diversity, as well as commemorating the advocacy of the late Sir David Amess MP, who campaigned for a number of years for Southend to be awarded city status.
City Day aims to foster a stronger sense of place and community by engaging local residents and groups in a day of festivities. The 2025 celebration will be the start of what is hoped to become an annual event, promoting unity and pride across the city.
Southend-on-Sea’s City Day celebration will take place in Southend High Street, with the main focus being a stage at Victoria Circus, complemented by stalls and walkabout entertainment along the length of the High Street. The event is designed to attract both residents and visitors, offering an engaging and inclusive experience that highlights local talent and community spirit.

Deterring Youth Nuisance 

at Chawkwell Station has been a joint priority recently. Complaints have been received around young people jumping barriers and also a security officer being injured on duty. 

Partners including British Transport Police, Children and Young Persons Officers, and Amulet Security joined our Community Safety Officers with both early morning and evening patrols. Such actions have deterred behaviour and will continue to be ongoing at the station.
