Air BnB removed for relieved neighbours
An effective piece of joint working with colleagues in the planning team has resulted in a property being removed from use as an Air BnB. The property was being let as a short-term holiday property and due to the size of the accommodation it was attracting large groups in a quiet residential street. Unfortunately, the use of the property as an Airbnb caused significant nuisance and concern to neighbours as visitors were not always considerate of local residents whom consisting of families with young children and elderly people.
There were frequent loud parties being held in the garden often until the early hours, late night BBQ’s, guests behaving in a hostile manner to local residents and issues of inconsiderate parking and driving.
Community Safety issued warning letters to the owners, engaged with the managing agent and worked with planning to make them aware of the reported change of use. This was investigated and following the usual planning process, the planning application was rejected. Community Safety worked with numerous neighbours to advise on personal safety, capturing evidence and raising their objections to the planning department. We kept them updated on the planning process and shared any evidence of the nuisance being caused with our colleagues in the planning team so they could make an informed decision having access to all the information on the impact this holiday let was having on the community.
The property has now been removed from the Air BnB website and the owners have confirmed they will now be offering the property to let on an assured shorthold tenancy which is a positive outcome for those neighbours affected.
