Spotlight On: BBC’s Ten Pieces Initiative at Highfield CE Primary
Highfield CE Primary School have been working enthusiastically over the last six months on the BBC Ten Pieces programme. Starting in November the Junior Department went to a screening of the Ten Pieces film at Turner Sims, giving the pupils exposure to the ten pieces of music they would be playing.
Specialist teachers from Southampton Music Services (SMS) came to school to lead each of the 5 classes in music workshops where the children used their given piece of music as inspiration for their own compositions.
The 30 piece school orchestra were invited to take part in two exciting collaborations. The first was with Baby SUSO, a 50 piece orchestra from Southampton University, who joined in playing Night on a Bare Mountain. The second was a joint concert with the acclaimed Southampton Wind Band, who played In the Hall of The Mountain King with the school. This was accompanied by the Y3/4 class who had worked on a dance to this piece of music.
Music Coordinator Nichola Caveney had the following to say about SMS involvement with the project:
“The support provided by Zoe Hunting, our project champion at Southampton Music Hub has been invaluable, and I think the project has helped to raise the level of awareness of music within the school, and hopefully the legacy will continue beyond this year.”

Recorder Extravaganza at Turner Sims
The annual Southampton Recorder Extravaganza took
place at the end of March. Southampton Music Hub and Turner Sims worked in partnership to present a
celebration of recorder playing. Two concerts took place featuring the band Jogleresa alongside 200 pupils from across the city. Joglaresa
are renowned for the way they imaginatively push, and often transcend the limits of what is often thought of as early music. The band were recipients of an Early Music Award from the Arts Council and received great critical acclaim for their
Crusades programme.
The concerts followed school workshops with
teachers and pupils led by band director Belinda Sykes. The theme of
this year’s extravaganza was the Magna Carta and the music was arranged by
Belinda for recorder players of all standards. Feedback from the children and schools was unanimous: they love playing
the recorder and they loved Jogaresa!
RTSFC Student Accepted for Prestigious Music Course
Richard Taunton Sixth Form College student Jack Gallacher has been offered a place on the prestigious Tonmeister sound recording course at Surrey University.
The university is one of three in the world to offer the course, with only 25 places, making Jack's achievement even more notable.
Paul Swindale, Learning Area Manager for Music & Performing Arts at RTSFC said: "For Jack to have received an offer for this course is very impressive. Not only did he need to demonstrate his outstanding academic ability, but also a wide range of scientific and musical knowledge."
When not studying for his A-Levels, Jack can be found performing in the RTSFC's jazz ensemble, as well as the Jazz Workshop and Southampton Wind Band.
He said: "I came to Richard Taunton's because of the excellent music department - I heard about the college's good reputation for music through my involvement with Southampton Music Hub."
