Christmas celebrations

Changes to garden waste collections over the festive period

There will be a 2 week break for all garden waste collections, as stated in the garden waste terms and conditions.

The last garden waste collections for 2014 will be on Friday 19 December. Garden waste collections will recommence on Monday 5 January 2015.  Please check your calendar for your collection dates.

Christmas Tree

Christmas tree collections

We will be collecting real Christmas trees from all residents who have them. Christmas tree collections commence from Monday 12 January through to Friday 23 January inclusive. If you would like us to take your Christmas tree then please leave it out on the edge of your property boundary (not the pavement) on your general rubbish collection day.

Cardboard

Cardboard boxes can go in the recycling bin but please remove any plastic and polystyrene packaging. You can also recycle newspapers, magazines, directories, junk mail, catalogues, egg boxes, tubes from kitchen and toilet rolls, cardboard packaging and pizza boxes.

Christmas Cards

All cards made of paper or card can go in your recycle bin. If they have a lot of plastic or other decorations attached to them, please put them in the residual bin. Some charity shops collect used Christmas cards. These can also be reused as gift tags or book marks.

Wrapping paper, plastic packaging, tin foil and polystyrene

We are unable to recycle these materials. Please place these in your residual bin. Wrapping paper can’t be recycled because it is often laminated/shiny/glittery, however it can be reused.

Food and drink cans

Give all cans a rinse and put them into your recycling bin. You don't have to remove the labels. You can also put lids into the recycling.

Please note there will be changes to bin collection days for waste and recycling (including glass) over the Christmas and New Year period.

Food Waste

Uncooked fruit and vegetables can be recycled and made into compost.  All cooked food should go in the residual bin.

You can recycle your cooked food into nutrient rich compost for your garden with the help of a Green Johanna. The Green Johanna is a food digester that you can feed all your kitchen scraps including cooked vegetables, meat, fish and bones along with your garden waste.

The Green Johanna is on special offer to Southampton residents for an amazing £40, including VAT and delivery. This is a massive saving of £68. Find further information on Green Johanna's and details of how to purchase here.

Father Christmas

Metal sweet and biscuit tins

These big tins make great storage containers but if you have too many, they can go into the recycling bin. Please make sure that all wrappers and packaging are removed first. Unfortunately we do not accept plastic tins.

Glass bottles and jars

As well as wine and beer bottles you can recycle cranberry sauce, pickle, and mayonnaise jars. All other glass items such as drinking glasses, cooking dishes and Pyrex jugs should be put in your residual bin.

Plastic Bottles

If it is plastic and it is bottle shaped then it can go into your recycling bin. It's not just milk bottles that can be recycled, but all plastic bottles including bleach, cooking oil, toiletries and cleaning products.

Empty aerosols

Empty aerosols such as deodorants, hair sprays and polish can be recycled. Please remove the tops.

Batteries

Most shops that sell batteries will have a collection facility as have most large supermarkets.
