Dear colleagues
Agreed Statement on Equal Pay
Southampton City Council is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with recognised trade unions (Unite, UNISON and GMB) over terms on which to settle the ongoing equal pay litigation. Settlement offers are being made without admission of liability by Southampton City Council and are subject to staff and Southampton City Council entering into a settlement agreement.
We understand that trade union colleagues will recommend the offer to their members. The settlement offer for each eligible claim will now be made to the union and law firm which represents that member of staff. It is the council’s aim to issue settlement offers to those who have brought Employment Tribunals with the support of their trade union by 15 October 2025.
Today we are announcing the opening of the internal process (see below) by which those current staff, who have not lodged an employment tribunal (ET) claim for equal pay but believe they may be entitled to do so, can make an internal application for a settlement payment.
How to make a submission
For eligible colleagues who have not already submitted an ET claim or who are not a member of a trade union, we are opening the window for submission from today, Wednesday 16 July. The window closes at 5pm on Thursday 31 July 2025.
During this time, eligible colleagues can register their details via this simple online form.
Please also refer to the online FAQs, which contain specific details about timeframes for settlement payments and other useful information.
If you have any queries that are not covered by our FAQs you can also send your questions to equalpay.queries@southampton.gov.uk.
Some school staff are also affected. We are communicating with them separately.
