Silchester Revealed: The Iron Age and Roman Town
Tuesday 6 May | 7.30pm | King Edward VI School, SO15 5UQ
The Roman town of Silchester, known as Calleva Atrebatum, holds a unique position among British and western provincial towns. This distinction stems, in part, from evidence suggesting Emperor Nero’s involvement in its development. However, the story of Silchester extends further back, originating as Calleva, a significant centre for the Iron Age Atrebates tribe starting in the late 1st century BCE.
In this talk organised by the Southampton branch of the Classical Association, Professor Michael Fulford will focus on recent and ongoing research into Calleva before the Roman Conquest, Nero’s intervention, and the town's transformation into a planned city in the later 1st century CE.
