Welcome to our ASC Practice Newsletter - July 2024
Summer is now in full swing! Even if the weather hasn't always got the message. Whether you're taking some time to sit out in the garden, take a walk in the park or just get out and about and enjoy the surroundings, make sure to look after yourself and enjoy the opportunity to get outside in the fresh air.
We've received £2 million to support those in need via the Household Support Fund
On Wednesday 15 May, we were awarded £2.2 million from the Government to extend the Household Support Fund.
The Household Support Fund scheme will provide support to families and children with free school meals during the holidays, supermarket vouchers, and help with housing costs.
The self-referrals will open on the following dates and remain open, subject to available funding.
More information about the fund and how to apply can be found online.
 Learning and Development
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training. The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a statutory requirement that regulated service providers must ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the standardised training that was developed for this purpose and is the government's preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff, including Adults and Childrens.
Training Tiers
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism comes in two Tiers of training. Staff will undertake Tier 1 or Tier 2, depending on their role.
Tier 1
Tier 1 of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is for people who require general awareness of the support autistic people or people with a learning disability may need.
Tier 2
Tier 2 of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is for people who may need to provide care and support for autistic people or people with a learning disability.
The Tier Guidance will help employers determine which Tier their staff will need.
A useful video can be found here.
Training is available to all staff on Grey Matters Learning or via My Learning. Access to GML can be arranged via Learning and Development.
- All staff in Adults must complete the Oliver McGowan e-learning, whichever Tier they come under. The e-learning must be done before attending the Tier 1 Webinar or Tier 2 Seminar
- Then they will either complete the Tier 1 Webinar (these are available now), OR the Tier 2 Seminar (not available yet as they are currently sourcing lived experience trainers)
- SCC colleagues must determine which Tier they fall under and attend the webinar or seminar accordingly
Anti-Racism Steering group is currently taking place on a Quarterly basis – as of November it will held in person at the Civic. Please contact Lisa Wallis if you have any questions/would like to attend.

Star of the Month
This month goes to Lisa Wallis – Professional Development and ASYE Coordinator for her fantastic work supporting others in an organised, committed manner and completing her coaching apprenticeship.
Kate, who was coached by Lisa, gave a glowing tribute to her.
'Lisa has worked tirelessly to achieve this award and I feel this needs to be recognised.
Lisa coached me for around 8 months, each time we met she was organised in her approach and a fountain of knowledge. At first, I was unsure about what I would gain from the support, but with Lisa’s determination and guidance I was able to develop my confidence in my role by using a variety of theories and methods of reflection.
Lisa is passionate about supporting others and this is reflected in the work she has completed with others. She is committed and no task is too much for her. Thanks Lisa for supporting me, some of the techniques we used during our sessions will stay with me as I move through my management journey!'
Lisa has now completed her Coaching Professional apprenticeship and is qualified to deliver Coaching to staff. If you are interested in Coaching or further information on what sessions would entail please contact her directly.
