The Journey - A one day conference

The journey

Join Prof John Denham and the Centre for English Identity and Politics on a one-day conference - The Journey, exploring memories of migration, belonging, aspiration and identity, at Southampton Art Gallery, Wednesday, 6 December 10am – 4pm.

Stimulated by oral histories from some of Southampton’s first generation South Asian heritage communities, national and local speakers will discuss how the experience of migration has shaped migrants, their descendants and the city and society that they joined. While the background to these stories includes the British empire and the experience of racism and discrimination, these are also personal stories of challenge, ambition, and achievement.  The event will look at how diverse individual and family stories come also to forge shared stories, and how memories can be utilised to explain how we came to be the nation we are today.

Book here. (This event is in person only).

There will be an opportunity to visit the related exhibition – The Journey, at the Sea City Museum next door.
