Adult Social Care - Can Do

August 2023

Welcome to our August ASC Practice Newsletter

This month we are concentrating on training around The Care Act and highlighting the benefits of Southampton Steps. Please complete this mandatory e-learning and book onto the Making Connections training that is scheduled for the autumn.

Southampton Steps

A

Download a chart of how Southampton Steps works.

Some of you may recognise the steps are very similar to Hampshire’s Seven strengths based tiers. We have developed these as a tool for practitioners, outlining the steps 1 - 5 to consider before the commissioned services steps 6 - 7 are considered.

The steps can be used at any point in a person’s journey, even with those already receiving commissioned care and support. Practitioners who have been using the tiers include what has been considered within their assessments, with evidence that they have followed the steps to promote independence.

We have also included useful links within the toolbox.

Begin your e-learning on MyLearning

Mandatory SCIE Care Act E-learning refresher training is now available.

We expect all of our Adult Social Care staff to undertake an e-learning package on My Learning. This can be accessed by searching ‘e-Learning – Care Act’

There are a number of links to training videos, reflective questions to consider and discuss within your teams. There are also downloadable handouts, as well as links to further resources.

You can work through the e-learning in sections – picking up where you left off so you can plan this learning to suit you – either booking out time to do it all in one go or a section at a time. There are around 6 hours of videos in total plus reflective questions.

  • Promote individual wellbeing: This theme explores promoting individual wellbeing, the importance of focusing on the individual and what this means, and how and when we must promote individual wellbeing. 3 videos lasting 40 mins in total, plus reflective questions.
  • Prevent, reduce and delay needs: This theme explores the duty of prevent, reduce and delay needs, how it can be exercised and how it links with providing support, whilst exploring options and benefits of prevention. 2 videos lasting 30 mins in total, plus reflective questions.
  • Information and advice: This theme explores the duties upon local authorities in relation to the provision of information and advice, when the duties apply and how these duties can support individuals in the community. 3 videos lasting 40 mins in total, plus reflective questions.
  • Independent advocacy: This theme explores the legal duty of providing an independent advocate, the key role of an appropriate person and the importance of following the legal requirements for both. 3 videos lasting 40 minutes in total, plus reflective questions.
  • Assessment of needs: This theme explores the key duties of the assessment of needs process, highlighting when the duties apply and how an assessment of needs can be carried out while ensuring all legal duties are met. 5 videos lasting 80 minutes in total, plus reflective questions.
  • Carer assessments: This theme explores the duties of the Care Act around carer assessments, including: who is a carer? What is a carer assessment? How to carry out a carer assessment. 3 videos lasting 65 minutes in total, plus reflective questions.
  • Determination of eligibility: This theme explores what determination of eligibility is, the legal duties from the regulations, including an explanation of the legal terms and ‘myth busters’. 4 videos lasting 35 minutes in total, plus reflective questions.
  • Needs, outcomes, care and support: This theme explores the difference between needs, outcomes and care and support, the different types and the relationship between them in the individual’s journey in compliance with the Care Act. 3 videos lasting 35 minutes in total, plus reflective questions.

*Don’t forget to work through the training on MyLearning so your activity is recorded on your record*.

There will be reflective sessions where we can focus on some of the questions more closely. Staff who are registered social workers can use these sessions for their Peer CPD.

Our Star of the Month Award goes to Patsi Whaley!

Our Way Ahead colleagues have fed back as follows: "You are so efficient; only just sent the email, and you have already organised to see them tomorrow!!! You are amazing … we’d be lost without you.

You do really make a difference not just to those who draw on services but also to staff.

You always go above and beyond with enthusiasm and passion. It was lovely to meet you in person and thank you so much for all your support and advice."

Well done, Patsi!
