Fire Risk assessments in Schools

FRA

Please read below Important information regarding Fire  Risk Assessments in Schools:

  • The FRA is not prescriptive with regards to time and the FRA should be reviewed if there is a reason to suspect the existing fire risk assessment is no longer valid or there has been a significant change to the premises, the use of the premises or persons using the premises, that may have affected the fire precautions. It should not wait until 2,3 or 5 years has passed.
  • The FRA/Review must be carried out by a competent person (A competent person is someone with experience and knowledge of fire safety as defined in the legislation The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005).
  • The competent person must ensure that people are safe and the building is compliant in accordance with the Fire Safety Order and the person signing it takes responsibility for the safety and compliance. The FRA/Review should be suitable and sufficient as required by the law under the fire safety order.

Reasons for review could include:

  • Changes to work activities or the way that you organise them, including the introduction of new equipment (e.g. installation of computer equipment in a classroom);
  • A change of use to part of your premises (e.g. a school hall for public performances);
  • Alterations to the building, including the internal layout;
  • Substantial changes to furniture and fixings;
  • The introduction, change of use or increase in the storage of hazardous substances;
  • The failure of fire precautions, e.g. fire-detection systems and alarm systems, life safety sprinklers or ventilation systems;
  • Significant changes to display material;
  • A significant increase in the number of people present; and
  • The presence of people with some form of disability
