Celebrating a Reign at SeaCity Museum

Coronation Street Party

SeaCity Museum will be opening an exhibition on Saturday 2 April to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, in the Southampton Stories gallery. Titled ‘Celebrating a Reign’, the exhibition will showcase how Southampton has celebrated coronations and jubilees of both Elizabeth II and previous monarchs. Exhibits will include banners used as decorations in the docks for the 1953 coronation and Southampton’s original City Charter of 1964, granted by the Queen.

Also in Southampton Stories, we have added a small display about the Falklands War to mark the 40th anniversary of the campaign, which includes six paintings by former President of the Society of Marine Artists, David Cobb. The paintings were recently donated to our Maritime & Local History collection in memory of Commander David Joel RN, who was the Naval Liaison Officer in Southampton during the Falklands War.

What does Culture mean to you?

Open exhibition

Southampton City Art Gallery are inviting artists to respond to the question ‘What does culture mean to you?’

Now the finalists have been announced and Southampton is in the top four in it's bid to become UK City of Culture in 2025, we wanted to remind you that you can explore and celebrate what culture means to you by submitting a piece of art to our Open Exhibition

Everyone’s culture is unique to them, and it can mean many different things to different people. It might be playing or watching sport, singing, music or dance. It might involve books, paintings, theatre or television. It might be different histories, religion or spirituality, or the food we love, how we style our hair, or our sense of fashion and what we wear.  It can be about the special or our everyday lives. It’s part of what makes us human. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy culture – it belongs to everybody and it is constantly evolving and changing.

Entrants are encouraged to consider the theme of culture as creatively and widely as possible and can submit work in both 2-D and 3-D form in any medium including painting, photography, drawing, original prints, mixed media, textile, sculpture and video.

The successful artists will have their work exhibited at Southampton City Art Gallery from 02 July – 10 September 2022.
