Recovery through prioritising health & wellbeing
Managing remotely is different...
A lot is expected of managers and team leaders to support the mental and emotional wellbeing of their team members as organisations run with flexible working hours, remote working and socially distanced work spaces.
What you can do -
-
Be a positive role model
- Look after yourself physically and emotionally
- Lead the way with healthy sustainable working patterns and practices
- Nurture supportive working relationships
-
Communicate, communicate, communicate
- Make it 2-way – asking, listening, exploring, sharing, explaining, summarising, training
- Tune in and connect with each person so you’ll be better able to pick if they are experiencing emotional challenges (and they won’t all say…). Knowing where to refer people for self-help and expert help
-
Coach – we are all more committed to solutions we find for ourselves and even more so now. A telling style is likely to leave people feeling unempowered.
-
Focus on outputs (rather than just time spent) – identify clear goals
-
Pay attention to health, safety & wellbeing
- Ensure adequate working equipment to prevent back or other musculoskeletal problems
- Have a system to ensure the safety of lone workers
- Regular and frequent morning and coffee chatting helps get the job done and protects mental health & wellbeing

Nurture hope and optimism
Creating and setting some goals creates focus and a sense of achievement which helps us to feel good about ourselves. Ideally mix small daily goals (like taking a walk or trying a new recipe) with more occasional goals (like watching a film, connecting with a friend or going on a holiday/day-trip).
