Townhill Park Redevelopment

As part of the council’s redevelopment of Townhill Park, Meggeson Avenue will be resurfaced between Townhill Way and Copse Road. We will also install some traffic calming measures, using distinctive texture and colour. This is the last phase which will complete the main works for the scheme that started in February of this year.

The work is planned to start from Monday 3 August 2020 and is expected to take up to 7 weeks to complete, weather permitting. There are multiple parts to the work, which are outlined below.

Part 1 – Planing of the road surface and concrete repairs
We will plane the top layer of asphalt to reveal the foundations, which then need to be carefully inspected and repaired. This will be undertaken in two sections – from Townhill Way to Wakefield Road (section A) and from Wakefield Road to Copse Road (section B). We will plane section A then section B, and then carry out concrete repairs in section A and then B – from Monday 3 August for 1½ weeks.

Part 2 – Resurfacing of the road
We will resurface the road in the same two sections, starting with section A from Wednesday 12 August. We will then move onto section B from Monday 17 August.

Part 3  Installing the raised table traffic calming features
We will install raised tables at the junctions of Meggeson Avenue with Hazelwood Road, Wakefield Road, Benhams Road, Ozier Road, Cutbush Lane and Copse Road, as well as speed cushions along Meggeson Avenue.

Vehicles will not be able to use these junctions whilst we are undertaking this work, however access will be maintained via diversion routes. The exception is Benhams Road where there is no alternative vehicle access. The provisional dates, subject to weather conditions, are as follows:

  • Hazelwood Road – Thursday 13 August
  • Wakefield Road and Benhams Road – Friday 14 and Saturday 15 August
  • Ozier Road and Cutbush Lane – Tuesday 18 August
  • Copse Road – Wednesday 19 August

Part 4 – Applying coloured textured print to the raised table traffic calming features
Before we can apply the final coloured imprinted surface to the raised tables, the tables need to be left for at least a week to allow the surface to cure and dry out. We plan to begin with Wakefield and Benhams Road in August during the school holidays to minimise the disruption. The provisional dates are:

  • Wakefield Road and Benhams Road – Thursday 20 August for 1 week
  • Ozier Road – Thursday 27 August for 1 week
  • Copse Road – Thursday 3 September for 1 week
  • Hazelwood Road – Wednesday 9 September for 4 days

Meggeson Avenue will be closed to through traffic, however we will maintain access wherever possible especially for emergency services. Bus stops along Meggeson Avenue will be temporarily closed.

We will be working between 7:30am and 5:30pm. We will aim to reopen the road by 6pm each evening and at the weekends, but there will be some occasions where we need to work over the weekend – this will be advertised on advanced warning signs closer to the time.
