Welcome to this week’s Covid-19 update for Southampton

Cllr Hammond

The Leader of the Council, Councillor Christopher Hammond, visited Ocean Village this week to see what local restaurants are doing to keep people safe as they welcome customers again. He also catches up with Giles Semper, CEO of Go! Southampton, on how we are working together to support the safe re-opening of shops, restaurants, pubs and other venues. You can watch this week’s video on YouTube here.

If you are out and about this weekend it’s important to plan ahead, follow social distancing guidance and practice good hand hygiene. If you are showing symptoms you must isolate immediately along with other members of your household and visit the NHS website to get tested, or call 111 for advice. For the latest national guidance visit gov.uk/coronavirus and for information on local support and changes to services visit our website at southampton.gov.uk/coronavirus.

Hampshire County Council introduces charging scheme at their HWRCs

HWRC recycling

From 1 August residents in Southampton who use any of the Hampshire County Council Household Waste & Recycling Centres (HWRC), rather than the Millbrook HWRC will need to sign up to an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system to continue to dispose of waste for free at Hampshire’s HWRCs. Residents who do not sign up to the scheme will have to pay a £5 charge in order to dispose of waste at any Hampshire County Council recycling centre outside of Southampton. Can you help Southampton City Mission’s Basics Bank? There’s an app for that…

Foodbank app

Over the past few months, Southampton City Mission Basic Bank has been busy helping residents in need of food solutions. This wouldn’t have been possible without your generous donations which continue to keep coming in – thank you!

While the enormous spike for emergency food has calmed down to a manageable level for now, it’s important to keep our local foodbanks stocked up with the help of a new Foodbank App.

The app is available as a free download from the Apple App Store or for Android on Google Play. Simply download ‘Foodbank App’, select Southampton Basics Bank to:

  • Keep up to date with what items they need most, via it’s red, amber and green traffic light system
  • See the latest news updates
  • Find venue locations & maps
  • And donate via an online giving portal

Chasing the rainbows

Rainbow Trail

A Rainbow Trail has opened in a selection of our city parks thanks to a community art project that shares a message of hope as we move forward through the coronavirus pandemic.

During July and August, you’ll be able to spot rainbows in parks including The Common, Freemantle Lake, Riverside Park, Southampton sport centre and the city centre.

Carved from up-cycled scaffold board and printed with designs by local children and residents of Southampton, scan the QR code to “capture the rainbow” and read the story attached.

Visit our website to find out more.

Take our Coronavirus resident survey

Coronavirus survey

We’d like to know how to better serve you in these unprecedented times.  By completing our Coronavirus residents survey, you’re helping to potentially improve community services, health programmes and other care for residents affected by this pandemic.  We’d especially like to hear from young adults. Please take 5 minutes to complete the survey and tell us about your experience during the pandemic.

Cycle route maps and videos

Hamble

My Journey, our sustainable travel programme, has created a collection of videos and online maps showcasing different cycle routes in and around Southampton, covering both key commuter corridors and routes more suitable for leisure purposes. Planning a route by bike can often be a barrier for those who are new to cycling or haven’t cycled for a long time. These resources are intended to help people overcome that barrier and give them the confidence to get around by bike. All of the videos and maps are available on the My Journey website here. Sniffing out illegal tobacco

Cooper the sniffer dog

With the help of sniffer dog Cooper, our Trading Standards team seized £6000 worth of illegal cigarettes on Monday. The illegal tobacco he sniffs out is not only harmful to your health, but often contains contaminants like asbestos, rat droppings, dead insects and human excrement. Sales of illegal tobacco are often coordinated by criminals engaged in other serious crime. To help you quit and reduce your risk of being seriously ill, log on to #QuitforCovid on Twitter weeknights, 7-8 pm, to get support and advice, please visit our website.

Southampton Timebank supports over 400 households since COVID-19 lockdown

Southampton Timebank

This year, the city will be celebrating Southampton Timebank Day on Sunday 12 July and recognising the fantastic Timebank members who exchange their time to help others.

Southampton Timebank members are outstanding members of our community who have volunteered their time to help others that have been isolated or shielding due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Since the lockdown started in March, Southampton Timebank has received requests from nearly 400 households asking for help, this has resulted in almost 1,200 exchanges, which includes the phone buddy scheme.

Timebanking is an exchange of skills and experience and supports people to trade their skills for someone else's in order to get a job done. It is an exchange of time, an hour for an hour. Residents can volunteer their time however they like, doing whatever they enjoy – more recently the support given to others has included picking up and delivering shopping or medications when other individuals weren’t able to do it themselves, delivery of food parcels or simply acting as a ‘phone buddy’ and ringing people who are isolated for a chat to check they are well.

For more information about Southampton Timebank and to join contact: timebank@southampton.gov.uk or visit Southampton Timebank.
