Please continue to follow the government's guidance on What You Need to Do.

Stay Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives.

Please use our parks responsibly

We’re really grateful to the vast majority of residents who are following government instructions to #StayHomeSaveLives

We know that parks are important to people and they remain open for daily exercise. However it is vital that you:

  • stay at least 2 metres from others at all times, and change your route or slow down if you need to
  • exercise alone or only with people you live with

You cannot use them for socialising, general recreation or sunbathing.  Tennis courts, other sports facilities and playparks are closed.

Visit the NHS website to read more about what you need to do to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

Looking for work? We're recruiting Care Assistants

care jobs

We are recruiting up to 50 new Care Assistants across the city to bolster our workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic, offering the opportunity for people new to the care industry to play a key role in the delivery of care and support to the most vulnerable in the city.

The Reablement and Rehabilitation Assistant role will be varied and could involve tasks such as preparing meals, ensuring medication is provided accurately and on time, through to personal care. The hours will be flexible to suit you and your availability.

If you are interested in supporting people with care needs in the city, this is a good opportunity to provide support, be trained to a high standard, learn the role of Care Assistant and could also be a gateway to caring roles in the future.

For more information and to apply visit our website.

Recognising Southampton's #UnsungHeroes

Allison is one of our dedicated Telecare Customer Services Advisors. She is one of Southampton's Unsung Heroes working around the clock to answer calls for help from the most vulnerable people living in our community.

Our Telecare Service offers 24 hour help to over 6,300 city residents. If you fall or feel unwell whilst at home then it provides peace of mind at the touch of a button via a pendant or wristband, connected directly to a local monitoring and responding team that give help when an alarm is raised.

We appreciate the efforts of all those doing vital work in our response to Coronavirus in Southampton and we want to show our gratitude to those going above and beyond to support their community in a future bulletin. From care assistants, to bin collection crews, to community response volunteers - they are all absolutely vital to the effort to ensure our key services keep running.

Dealing with domestic abuse during the COVID-19 crisis

Domestic abuse

The current climate has made this an anxious time for everyone. The pressures of worrying about money and jobs, dealing with school closures and working from home are all affecting how we manage our daily lives.

Living in lockdown, especially, can feel like a pressure cooker situation, and unfortunately for some, the stress can boil over into abuse or violence.

If you’re experiencing domestic abuse, either as a victim or perpetrator, you’re no doubt feeling frightened and isolated. Support services are still there to help you, even if it’s not possible to have face-to-face meetings, there is still advice available online and over the phone, whenever you need it. Head to our website for details on local and national organisations which can help you.

If you’re a council tenant and worried about domestic abuse in your home, remember you can contact your Local Housing Office in complete confidence. If you’re in danger, or if you feel one of your neighbours is, always call 999.

Don’t forget, the Silent Solution system is in place if you’re unable to speak. Dial 999, after an automated message you will be prompted to press 55 which will transfer you to the police. A call handler will then assess your call and arrange help.

COVID-19 scams

Beware of scams

A Council Tax scam via text and email has been circulating locally. We urge people NOT to click on links or attachments in suspicious text or emails, and never respond to unsolicited messages, texts and calls.

We will never ask you for banks details via text or phone.

  • If you are unsure if something might be a scam, please check on citizensadvice.org.uk and search ‘Scam check’ or call them on 0808 223 1133
  • To report a scam, please visit actionfraud.police.uk or call them on 0300 123 2040
  • If it’s Southampton City Council related, please call our COVID-19 helpline on 023 8083 4800

Garden waste and glass collections suspended

Glass and grass

With the city’s Garden Waste and Glass collection services currently suspended, glass should be stored safely at your home until the service is reinstated. Do not put glass in your general waste bin. If absolutely necessary it is possible to deposit glass at one of the many glass bottle recycling banks in Southampton, however this should only be done as part of an essential journey, such as visiting a supermarket or convenience store to purchase necessities. Where possible, please select goods and groceries that have recyclable packaging, such as canned goods or cartons, rather than glass.

Residents who are subscribed to the 2020-21 Garden Waste collection service will receive a renewal discount for the 2021-22 service that will reflect the duration of disruption to this years' service. In the meantime, please consider home composting as much of your garden waste as possible.
