Coronavirus header COVID-19

We all must listen to and act upon the advice we're being given by the Government to try and stop the spread of this deadly pandemic. The message we've been given is clear - stay at home, help to save lives.

Government advice and guidance

Gov UK

The Government has released new guidance on staying at home and away from others.

If we keep our day-to-day contact with other people to a minimum, we will reduce the spread of the infection.

Stay at home

You should only leave the house for one of four reasons.

  • Shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible.
  • One form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household.
  • Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person.
  • Travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home.

Anyone can spread the virus. Visit the www.gov.uk/coronavirus website for a full list of advice, guidance and information.

Further business and premises will close following the Prime Minister's announcement, full details of those expected to close can be found here.

See the NHS website for other important advice to slow the spread of almost any germs, including coronavirus.

Wash your hands!

washing hands

When you do have to leave the house, and when you get back home after going out, please wash your hands.

It's down to all of us to make the effort to stop the spread of this virus.

Council buildings closed and services limited

Many of the services we provide are absolutely essential to the day to day running of the city. We have robust plans in place to ensure we can continue to pick up your bins and care for and safeguard adults and children. We are also rolling out plans to provide a support network for the most vulnerable people in Southampton.

Please bear with us during these difficult times.

itchen bridge - small

Itchen Bridge

The Itchen Bridge will be free to everyone from 7pm on 24 March. The situation will be reviewed in 3 weeks’ time.

Parking

Permit parking restrictions will not be enforced in Resident Parking Zones 1 – 18, 20, 22 and 23 (the other zones are non-residential). This will be reviewed on 30 April 2020. Charges still apply to both on-street and off-street pay and display parking as well as within the barrier controlled car parks. Card payments (including contactless) can be made at all of these locations.

Permit parking restrictions will be temporarily lifted in Hollybrook Cemetery to facilitate parking for the additional NHS resources.

play park
  • All of the play parks in city have now been closed.
  • The Civic Centre is now closed to the public.
  • Non-urgent housing repairs will cease but we will maintain our emergency repair services
  • Marriage and civil partnership ceremonies are postponed
  • We are continuing to allow people to enter the Bugle Street Office one at a time for registrations of births and deaths
  • The number of mourners allowed at the Crematorium has been reduced and ceremonies will only take place in East Chapel
  • School crossing patrols will cease due to limited numbers of children attending schools

Please visit our website for the full listi of all affected services.

Household Waste & Recycling Centre in Millbrook closed

Bins and recyling coronavirus

Kerbside waste and recycling services are currently making collections as per the normal schedule.

However, in line with last night's announcement about essential services, the Household Waste & Recycling centre in Millbrook will now close until further notice.

Please follow the guidance on cleaning your home and safely disposing of waste that might be infected. You can also help to protect our Waste Collection operatives and stem the spread of the virus by disinfecting your wheelie bin handles once you've put them out and washing your hands after you've brought your bin back in.

Gateway and the cash office now closed

Paying the council

From 12pm on Tuesday 24 March, both Gateway and the Cash Office will be closed until further notice.

You can use our website to report issues or apply for services and you can pay the council online.

Public Transport

Corona travel

You can still apply for or renew both senior and disabled bus passes online, by emailing the SmartCities team or calling 023 8083 3008.

Payments for replacement passes can also still be made online. Please visit the SmartCities website for further information.

Community Action and volunteer work

Community and volunteer coronavirus

The council is working closely with Southampton Voluntary Services (SVS) and NHS Southampton City Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to co-ordinate a voluntary, community and social enterprise response and direct help to those that most need it.

Please take part in a short survey to build a picture of the support available across the city and how we can collectively support these organisations to help our community.

Online and doorstep scams

Unfortunately some individuals are using the current pandemic to try and target those who are most vulnerable.

National Trading Standards are providing details on the most common scams, how to spot them, how to avoid them and how to report them.
